I know most of you guys want info on how to get fast, well so do I, so here's your opportunity to teach me how to get faster. It's almost certain you have some secret that you're holding back. Please help me and who knows, maybe you'll learn something while you teach. /images/boards/smilies/wave.gif
 
I like to sand my body of cars with the micro mesh pads all the way to 12000 grit. Not sure if that's a secret, but on my last car I got the paint so good I didn't clear coat it.

I like to sand from what I believe is a flat/level platform. I place the sand paper atop a 12" x 12" granite tile.

For me it all starts with a good drill job for the axles. Then check on the tuning board that drill job is good before doing ANYTHING else. If the drilling is bad there is not a lot you can do to be competitive with everyone else.
 
On a serious note, this might be a good opportunity for one of you new guys for some reverse mentoring.
 
im new to this level of pinewood racing so take this for what its worth....
1. HAVE FUN WITH IT (isnt that the reason)
2. read post after post on this forum, tons of info just gotta dig through all the chat to find
3. listen, when a pro tells you something take what they say and work with it
4. get a baseline from what your building now and try to adjust for speed if your speed drops go back to how you were doing it and try something else
 
Trust but verify. I listen to anyone who can achieve a speed badge. From there you must verify if their suggestions will work for your style of build. There are so many critical details to making a fast car and they must all work together. Forget what place you finish in and focus on your times. I've yet to win anything in the NPWDRL but the times are getting better. I hope the pros will forgive me if I ask more than one of them the same question. I'm not doubting or discounting their input, just trying to expand my options and maybe spot what they all have in common.

Best example is if you only listened to Space Walker, you would be running Nelly Fae fenders. But if you observe what the pros in the NPWDL race and what they suggest, you'd be running GEE fenders. No insult meant to Space Walker but I'm going to follow what the majority confirms as the fastest option.

I think everyone has a slight twist on how they do their process....whatever you do just be 1) very meticulous and 2) make sure the process is repeatable....this only comes with doing whatever process that fits your cars and works, over and over again, race after race...having said that however, don't be afraid to try new things....just make sure you document or remember what u did LOL! Of course Kinser knows this already so its not much of a tip or secret haha....but I think can help many others....patience is truly the KEY!
 
Start with a known good combination like DD4H's DVD prep and experiment on your own from there. Don't start with a mishmosh and complain that you're slow!

Don't overwork the wheel bores, less can be more sometimes!

Only make one change at a time!

Practice on getting a repeatable prep. When you get that down, then you'll be better prepared to know when you found something faster!
