Outlaw Race Fun with Ducted Fan

While my son was busy building his pinewood masterpiece, I built and entered an outlaw car. We joked about building a ducted fan car for a couple of years, so it was time to make it happen The hardest part was finding a brushed motor to fit into a ducted fan to attach to a lighter weight...

Final Scout Race--Thanks to so many on this forum !

He took the philosophy he read on this site of "you don't get fast building one car a year" to heart, so he built 3 cars, about 2 dozen fenders, prepped 3 sets of wheels and 30 axles. Bulldog's video made fenders achievable, but he decided to try making them individually this year, but the 2...

Final Scout Race--Thanks to so many on this forum !

https://youtu.be/QGAUL0ctkTg This was my son's last year racing as a scout. He is more skilled with tools, more focused, and confident in his abilities. It was his intention to repeat as the overall district winner this year, but was topped by another AOL scout. Times on a Freedom track...

    Black Ice and Alcohol

I'll defer to the pros, but my thought is alcohol can leave a residue. Also, using 4 parts of the nail buffer going from more to less coarse completely removes pieces/sometimes chunks of graphite picked up from the (scout-level) track and smooth out any divots created.

    Black Ice and Alcohol

I use a pro tread cleaner/finger nail buffer from DD4H to clean the tread. Others recommend a magic eraser with and without rubbing alcohol. I tried all and saw improvement with the tread cleaner/buffer.

Diamond disk set--$6.99 at HF: https://www.harborfreight.com/diamond-rotary-cutting-discs-5-pc-69657.html I made a fixture with guidance from this site using two 1-inch wood pieces and use a small hobby saw or a hack saw to make the groove

BSA Block - Cutting Three Bodies

I've made 3 blanks from a BSA block and sanded it by taping a piece of sandpaper onto a piece of granite tile. I checked its flatness using The Block. One of the blanks worked well at the scout level. The rest I messed up during a build.

    Almost District Champion!

I was anxious to hear how it went thinking you received your order and would complete the build the way you planned. There was nothing more you could do and your son saw how to do your best. There's no doubt with all that experience under your belt, you'll dominate next year!

Great job! Sounds like the competition is steep. Your daughter's matching shirt and car theme is classic--Team Moana!

What is Tamiya Swab Item number in the Black Ice Kit

Thanks B_Regal! I saw the thread mentioning cotton rounds and will try that along with your advice. I definitely need to improve my wheel prep....and my axle prep....and a dozen other things....

What is Tamiya Swab Item number in the Black Ice Kit

I use the 104 and it is snug, although it does compress quickly. When I try to use black ice in the same way as DD4H's video, it doesn't hold the wheel tightly as I spin the wheel and apply black ice to the inner hub, edge and outer hub.

    Pack Winner! Thanks to everyone!

I tried a magic eraser with and without alcohol, but prefer a 7-way finger nail buffer using #4-#7--like DD4H sells. As advised on this forum, it makes a noticeable difference. The magic eraser seemed too fine to remove all the accumulated bumps.
