1 week to scout race

Our DFW axle is bent 1.5 degrees. Is there an advantage with less or more bend or as long as it's 2-4" of drift in 4' that's good?

I run better with more bend in wide wheel cars.... I bend until it just fits through the wheel bore. Is there an advantage, I don't know, some people like more some less....

I would set your car to drift closer to 4" in 4ft. or maybe a touch more.... I think 3-4" is a good place to start with a good set-up track. As the track gets worse I would set the drift more... 2" is not enough IMO even on a perfect track like the NPWDRL.

Do we have to think about the outside ridges of the BSA wheel riding on the track if we bend too much?

Aligning it up again. Straight holes with straight BSA axles in rear. I can turn the right rear axle to get wheel to go to head but it's very light and little turns either way from there get it to stay away and dance between body and head.

The left rear will go to head the same way, lightly in forward but in reverse she dances between the body and head.

With straight rears do I want the wheel to dance between them or try to get it to the head anyways?

Going forward it should go to the head or it will wiggle. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

When I first started building, any cars with wheels that didn't rotate to the head were very slow.

thats what i thought. i think the axle and hole are so straight that it wont adjust

With 1 1/2 degree bend in rear axles it looks like I can find the sweetspot for each wheel. Thanks

We took 2nd in Pack. Had times of 3.011, 2.98, 2.98 and 2.96.
Lost to regular Pack winner who had times of 3.015, 2.97, 2.96, and 2.94. Not sure how he made his keep going faster. He had fenders, we didn't.

He won Most Patriotic but several said it was the most beautiful car they had ever seen.

Thank you everyone for your help, patience and late night answering sessions. Now for Districts.

This car wouldn't have done this well without your help. My boy's face just lit up when he had a faster time than the Pack winner after their first heat.

The Outlaw car was unreal. I shorted out the 9.6v battery 1 hr before we left for the race. I found a 6v and wired that in. I took the front motor out and ran in 2WD. I had to catch it at the bottom because even though it was very heavy and had a cut off switch on the bottom it would've blown right off and kept going.

Thanks MOFAST!

We're trying to get timesheets for our den and if we do I'll have accurate times listed. These are as I remember them.

some nice wood work cutting the BSA out! And very nice patriotic paint job!

You should send this in to the Mid America race as well...Id say it should have a great chance at the categories for most boy scout related design or most patriotic design...

I'm unfamilair with the MidAmerica race. Do you guys just race locally or are you actually shipping your cars to races and getting them shipped back.

Mid America has a number of classes including an open scout, open Kids, and open Adult class for people who want to race no matter where they are in the country. You fill out the entry form, there is a cost tied to sending the cars to them for racing, and they race the cars on race day and you can see how your cars do against all other people sending in from all over....the open scout one even breaks it into dens (tigers vs wolves vs bears etc)

We send in by Proxy....pack the cars in car carrier boxes and ship them USPS over to the race (include return shipping label and they will ship them back to you without a problem and include any prizes or trophies you win!).

The best place for information is on the forums under Local Racing Events. Xanthrum (Greg) is the one person responsible for posting much of the information and responding to any questions you have, and is the coordinator for this event.

If your interested definitely give that forum post a read thru and even check out the Mid America Pinewood derby website for information, rules, updates, pics from last year etc....

Its a pretty fun event too if your able to get out there, lots of door prizes and trophies for the racers in a various classes....There was also a "pro" class race out at the same time there on a separate track for those builders that have been building and league racing.

Similar to the league racing, the race is also webcasted so people who could not attend but mailed cars in can watch the races live from their home computer.

Its just another chance to be able to run that PWD car you spent so much time and effort to build with your son one more chance to compete before mothballing it for the rest of its existence....that is unless you also send it to NPWDRL league races which I also recommend!!!

My boy really wants to do this after our District race in March. Thanks for the invite.

1)Is there a standard shipping box and packing setup everyone goes with?
2)Looks like USPS is commonly used. How much does that cost?
3)How do trophies/awards get sent back to you if your shipping box was only big enough for your car?
4)Do you guys set your weight at, say 4.95 oz to make up for differences in the scales or if you set your car at 5.00 and their scale says 5.1 do they remove some putty for u?

John at DD4H sells shipping boxes with the foam. You may have to cut the foam yourself to fit the car you build but there are posts on this forum that go into detail on that and certainly many experienced racers who have cut the foam for their cars can chime in if you need help!

I believe most use the USPS priority mail shipping boxes with the flat rate....so the cost will depend on what size box you use....I use mostly the medium and large boxes. The rates for these are posted on the USPS site. Since you also have to provide return shipping for your cars, id go ahead and just create an account on the USPS site and now you can print your own shipping label and return labels for the boxes. Its really quite easy.

I think some will send a large enough sized box that awards normally fit but ive read that if id doesn't fit that Mid America will ship it to you separately, but that's a good question to ask Greg on the mid America forum as well just to verify but last year I believe that is what was stated.

I think if your car sits at 5 ounces or as close to it without going over then your good to go. I honestly cant say what would happen with a car just very minimally over weight....whether they would take weight off or not....I think that's another question for Greg but the safest thing is to make sure your scale is properly calibrated with a 5 ounce standard (I use it constantly to check my scales) and if it is, then it should not be a problem with the scales being so different as for this to be a significant issue....again get it to 5 ounces and no more and it should be good.
