2016 Pinewood Derby World Championship in Time Square

There is an all new unrecognizable 2.0 wheel that is going to be unleashed there.

LOTS of time go into these. With the belly aching that goes on about price I didn't even bother offering them. With the clear wheel covers they will never be seen.

Wonder if the organizers of the NSC races need to take heed to this, since I believe that they allow clear wheel covers...

I don't recall ever complaining about prices.
I do have a limit of what I'll spend for a kid's race car, but would love to at least have the option.

That said, of John's wheels on his site, which ones do the good folks here think might be best?

Rages?
BASX?

Cheetah? Not sure if they'd get through inspection, though.

Don't the rules prohibit interior material removal? If so, then Cheetahs are out. I think the Rage sounds like your best bet, unless I'm missing something in the rules that would prohibit them.

Of course they do. If you are going to bill yourself as a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP then you better be prepared for the buttload of cheating that will occur and you better know how to run the race to look for it. Even better, write the rules so that everything is not cheating. There is no better rule than a wheel weight rule with the winners getting a wheel pulled and weighed.

Are you addressing the NSC or the "World Championship" derby here?

FWIW, I think the NSC has done a bang-up job creating the best Scouting-level rules in the country.

Pulling a wheel is obviously the most accurate way to verify wheel legality, but it does have certain repercussions, especially at the scout level.

That said, I do wonder how well the interior of a wheel can be checked with air shields in place. Perhaps some of the NSC folks could shed some light on that?

The price statement was not aimed at you. More of a tongue in cheek statement... You need BASX 1.170 to meet their rules.

PM me if you need custom wheels for any event!

What really sucks is I bought some Nitros when the new axles came out with the intent of running them at this race, but then they went and changed the rules and now they won't work.

Save 'em for next years' Mid-Ams?

I'd probably buy the specific Mid America wheels if I was going to race there.

I'll figure out something to do with them, I suppose.

I could be wrong, but my suspicion is that by the time you've cut the wheel down to the Nitro level, you don't have a whole lot more benefit to removing any additional weight. I suspect that the actual MoI of the wheel is extremely close.

When I get some time, I need to go read up on measuring MoI of a given wheel and see what kind of testing can be done on that kind of thing. Could be very informative.

That does suck! They changed the rules last year at the last min as well.

I guess the rules that were there when I ordered the Nitros were last year's. Nitros would have been perfectly legal by those.

I thought they were "the" rules....then they updated them. Oh well.....

I still don't get them letting us use any axle with any mod done to them, but "no lightened wheels". If you're going to allow grooved and oversize axles, why stop there?

You have the "Stock" division for "no mods". Why call it Pro Stock? The only differences are, axles, wheel base, 3 wheel car...and the Stock doesn't actually say you can't have a 3 wheeler either, IIRC.

Last year they changed the rules completely with two weeks to go. There is still time for another change.

For the sake of argument, axles are something that are almost impossible to inspect without teardown. Wheels at least have some degree of inspectability. Also, the very best set of axles is going to cost you something in the $15.00 range, while a set of wheels that has been professionally lightened is going to be $35-$50. I don't see it as a terribly controversial cut-off point.
