So my son won his pack race and we went on to represent the District. Amazingly, we won that and got to go to the finals! Ended up coming in second place in the finals for the Council!! I did some rough math and figured that my son effectively came in second place out of 2000+ cars, which I am more than happy with.

Just wanted to give a hearty thank you to all the people here, for the shared knowledge and information that is found on these forums. I really do think that the memories made working together with my son on this project will last a lifetime.

Takeaways for me are:
--You cannot buy a win (because I research a LOT and know what cars are available online and for what price)
--The more time that is put in, usually makes the car faster (we started after last year's derby building this years car)
--I am pretty sure that I could build a car that would win the whole thing in a couple hours, but all those extra hours making my son do the work are priceless to me.
--There is a HUGE amount of information out there, it takes a lot of time to digest and come to your own conclusions and then relay that to your child. That being said, every step taken to reduce friction and move weight toward the back of the car is time saved at the finish line.

Thank you all!

Congrats! We are at the point that it sounds like you were last year.

I have 7 weeks until counsels and probably too much of an ask to compete this year. Especially in this particular counsel.

"I have 7 weeks until counsels and probably too much of an ask to compete this year. Especially in this particular counsel. Northstar" lol Did I write this? I decided late January to build a car for our district races. Building everything except a car has me admitting I will not have a car ready for next weekend.
