So, with all my cars in the mail to Utah for Saturday, I HAD to have something to do...

Started on my car for the charity race at work this year. /images/boards/smilies/biggrin.gif

Nice. Is that carved from a single piece?

Yep.... Single piece of Balsa.

I will build a chassis for it when I am closer to getting the detail work done.

It will have a regular 1/4 inch setup like I use for my league cars.

Thanks, guys.

I am kind of excited myself... The block of wood just sat on my bench for the last 6 weeks. To get this far in the last couple of days really surprised me. But roughing the shape is going to be a LOT easier than the detail work that will be coming in the near future.

Still trying to decide on colors for this thing though... I am tossing the idea of Orange or Yellow, and maybe putting flames down the side of it too.

Still not sure, but I have a feeling I have a few weeks to come up with a color plan for it... I still need to come up with a name too... All in time, I guess.

You should consult your nearest ZZ Top album cover for appropriate colors... /images/boards/smilies/wink.gif

Thanks, Joel... I will..

I did some work on it last night, doing rounding on the hood and trunk... It is moving kinda quick, so, I will hopefully be in the scoop stage soon (body hollowing)

Hey guys,

Just wanted to post the updated version of the car. I was hoping to do some work Saturday, but spent all day watching the races. LOL And I cant carve and do intricate work when I am all hyped up.

I worked on it yesterday though. Nice relaxing Father's Day. /images/boards/smilies/thumb.gif The picture behind the car gave me the inspiration for this one.

I did something similar 3 years ago with the following differences:
1 - I used a Ford Cobra 69
2 - I didn't use balsa for the body (my mistake)

I ran it a few times and it was slow.

So I turned the body upside down and carefully hollowed out the entire inside (a couple of times I punched through the top, but was able to repair it satisfactorily).

Then I put on John's latest wheels (latest at the time).

The car actually ended up running in the top 12 at the time.

Now it just sits on my "retired shelf", because there is no class where it could possibly be competitive.
But I was thinking that if you carefully hollowed out your body, used a good very light chassis, you might do well in SS
Question for the forum: Would a car like this 37 for be able to run in either BASX or Street Rod???

Or maybe one of these years we should have a special class for beauty only, like maybe once or twice a year.

Thanks guys.

Opa, this is for a special occasion. While I would not expect it to win here in this league, at the race for charity at work, I think it might hold some of it's own. I am specifically making this car to win in the best design class, but I want it to haul it down the track also. I will be hollowing it out, and putting it onto a chassis that I will make from sugar pine.

I made a Nissan GT 2020 concept car last year and did it from pine. a LOT of weight there, that is why I am running balsa this year.

Those curves are so sweet, I think I've got cavities now.

I will be taking notes as you get to the sealing and painting step, you'd better believe.

Thanks guys !

I will post the next pics when I shoot some paint to it... it will be a little while for that stage though. a LOT of prep before it gets to that point.

What do you use to seal/harden the balsa for painting? Are you a fan of applying CA glue, or do you use something else?
