40 Foot Wood Track

Assuming the wood track is in good shape, is there any specific setup anyone would reccommend as far as rail riding and rear wheel canting?

Our Pack wood track racing surface is right at 40 feet long with a 4 foot drop and approx 30 degree slope. The best times on this track were in the 3.030 range with one car making a 2.98 run.

What COM should I shoot for assuming stock wheelbase and slots?

wood track stay around 3/4 com if track is rough this will b safe.If track is smooth you can get by with less but the wheel prep and axel prep would be more advantage than the com.Check rules about canting and 3 wheels or 4 wheels on the ground.That makes alot of difference.What about lathe tires? I need to know about the rules to realy help!

Thanks for the reply, here are those rules:

Wheels and Axles:

The car shall roll on the wheels from the kit. The wheels shall turn about the axle nails from the kit. The axle nails shall be firmly affixed to the wood of the car body, and MUST be placed in the original 'axle grooves' in the supplied wooden block. It must be obvious to the judges that the grooves, wheels, and the nails from the kit are being used.


Wheel Treatment:

Wheel treatment (hub and tread smoothing and polishing) may not result in substantial removal of mass or in reducing the wheel width from the original kit wheels. Removal of BSA logo on inside and outside of wheel not allowed. Some of the original "tread marks" on the wheel face must remain intact, i.e. apparent to the inspector. Wheels may not be machined to a beveled condition and the portion of the wheel surface that contacts the track must remain parallel to the axle.

Unacceptable Construction:

The following may NOT be used in conjunction with the wheels or axles: hubcaps, washers, inserts, sleeves, bearings.

Good advice... 3 wheel rail runner. 3/4" com. Set the car up right and you will kill the track record.

That COM is 3/4 in front of rear axle? No canting?

Yes in front of the rear axle hole.More weight in the back better you are.Make sure the rules say no canting of the wheels and not the axles. If it says wheels,then cant the axles. That's what our rules say is no canting of the wheels. They mean no lathing the wheels to make them canted where they touch the track.So we cant the axles and do the same thing.They have never said anything but CHECK with someone in charge. Its better to ask now than at weigh in. Remember in car design "thin to win" just thick enough to get the weight in it and axles. Flat plank design or wedge would be great.

the portion of the wheel surface that contacts the track must remain parallel to the axle.

I take this as allowing any cant angle you want. It does NOT allow a wheel which is shaved on an angle such that it is canted with axles being straight.
