7"L x 2 3/4"W Street Stock Body?

After winning districts my son isn't so worried about out and out speed now. He decided last month after seeing pics on this forum to try and build a street rod class car along the lines of Skippy Kicky's GT40 for next year that can compete in the pack race. The problem I foresee is identifying a 1:25 scale Le Mans style model car body that fits within the 7"l x 2.75"w dimensions rule. Any suggestions on a known kit with body that will pass? We have already been through the model aisle at Hobby Lobby and short of opening sealed kits and measuring cars this could be a challenge.

I think the goal will be to not get smoked while being seen. I suspect he will have to try and qualify for next year's district at the district open race in the morning before the championships. I doubt a street stock car can win his den to prequalify for districts after he took everyone in the pack to school this year.

I had done the same research, and only found one model that fits: 1:25 scale Porsche 911. It's 6-7/8" x 2-3/4".

As long as your wheelbase requirements are not 4-3/8", you're golden. The wheelbase is just over 3.5".


You can use the internet to find out if a model will fit your needs. Find a model that looks promising, then Google the car's length and width. Divide that by the scale (24, 25, 32, etc.) and you have your dimensions.

Some smaller scale models will fit in the outer dimensions, but then you run into issues with enough room for the wheels.

Thanks for the heads up. That is a short wheelbase. The length vs width would bear that out in almost every case though. The 911 with its engine behind the rear wheels messing things up here for a rearward COM.

Silly Porsches with their engine in the wrong place. The 911 certainly continues to be the most successful example of engineers forcing a square peg in a round hole.

Your post did get me curious about Le Mans -style cars. You won't find anything in a 1/25 scale that meets the size requirements. I did find that a 1/32 scale Porsche 917 like this one: Vintage MPC Porsche 917 European Racing Series Model Kit 1/32 PARTS SEALED will work. 2.5" wide, but only 5" long. And running on a 2.8" wheelbase.

Your son may not think it cool, but a Classic Mini Cooper in 1/20 will work (2-3/4" x 6" x 2-5/8"). /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

RSR: It definitely looks like the 240Z would work for you. Plus it has that racing cachet.
(To be completely honest, I did most of my searching for scout legal cars from within my own collection — and was pretty happy at finding the 911 would work. Then, based on all the others that wouldn't [928, Cobra, Lambo, Subaru WRC, etc.], I pretty much stuck to the belief that there wasn't much else out there.)

Go for the BRE-Z. It'll be a challenge, but very cool.

W8n: If you're looking to purchase a kit, eBay is the way to go as far as selections. Hobby Lobby is great to buy from as they have a 40% off coupon. If you want to see the current kit offerings, Round2Models.com lists the recent kits from the AMT family (AMT, Ertl, Polar Lights, Johnny Lightning, Lindberg), and Revell.com has Revell and Monogram.

I am a Google man myself. Between Chrome and Wikipedia I can almost always get the job done. But I have the advantage of being a car nut for the last 20-plus years. I love Petrolicious.com or Jalopnik and those are just the really good ones for the last few years.

My thought process on the bre 240Z was that Crash EnBurn suggested a 911. In the early seventies the BRE 240Z race cars we're beating up on the 911 for less money. The 240Z has a wheelbase with the rear wheel closer to the rear end of the body than the 911 which should better for pinewood COM, without an increase in the width of the body.

I would love to go with a more wedge profile car like a Countach or other Lamborghini. Once we move out of the '70s I cant think of a mid-engined super sports car that isn't really wide.

The Ford GT40 or Porsche 917 were good thoughts but I would love to do a Ferrari 512M. I don't know if a model is available but I think they are gorgeous. Talk about racing cachet'and it wasn't even red.

Do yourself a favor and take your phone or tablet out in the garage and watch this through your car's speakers turned up pretty well. No matter how your wife, kids or dog looks at you there is nothing like the wail of a racing V12.
