Another oil question

Okay, so I ordered John's DVD, oil, axle prep kit, wheel bore prep kit and Blue Thunder. I cleaned and prepped all of the wheels and axles as directed by the DVD. We have our district races tomorrow, and I am wondering what how I can tell if there are any glaring problems with my process without access to a test track. I know that a wheel with oil will not free-spin as long as one with graphite, but is there any benchmark on how long a properly prepped wheel SHOULD spin with oil? Should the wheel spin completely silently or should I just be able to hear a whisper?

The reason I am asking is that when I free-spin the wheels, some are completely silent and smooth, but only spin for 8-10 seconds. A couple of others will spin for about 15 seconds and seem to spin faster with the same amount of force, but I can hear the wheel spin (not loudly, but more than the others). If I back the axle out a bit, I can see a light layer of oil on the first axles, but on the others, I can just see microscopic droplets of oil (using a 10x loupe).

I know that using too much oil will slow you down, but since this is the first time I have used it, I don't know how to determine how much is too much... I used about 2 drops or oil per axle, although it is possible the application was heavier on the more silent axles (that don't spin as long).

2 drops max!! The slower more quite one probably do have more oil and or thunder. One thing to remember with oil and oil prep, less is faster. It is a fine balance between perfect, too little, and too much. I would use the ones that you can hear the wheel spin and that spins a little longer. As long as the noise you are hearing is smooth and consistent. 500 post!! To bad only about 50 of them are worth any thing.

I just ordered the DVD and wheel bore kit,Blue Thunder, new wheels and oil. Is this all i will need to get started? NEVER used oil before! Just have been scout racing with graphite. I have a track so just want to play with oil. Maybe next year i will b ready to try some raceing with u guys! Any thing i need to know other than want might b on the dvd? Thanks!

Thanks, QT. After we get through tomorrow, I am planning on building a couple of cars for the Eliminator class, hopefully in time for March Madness. The Eliminator class seems to be the closest to the rules we have for the Royal Ranger pinewood derbies, so I am hoping the experience I get there will translate to next year's racing season.

Ideally, you would also get some of the 93G axles, and a polishing kit as well. Even if your plan is to use Scout axles (due to rules, etc), the polishing kit is also an important step (you'll see it in the video).

Are you allowed to re-drill your axle holes? If so, I suggest a Silver Bullet as part of your tool kit. This will make a HUGE difference, since you can accurately drill canted holes for your rear wheels.

As for "other stuff to know"....poke around the site....you'll see a lot!

Good Luck

You also need the axle polishing kit and polish.

Oil is the way to go! So much easier to get the lube where you want it. The oil doesnt fade off like graphite, either. Great stuff.

already have axle polishing kit. And yes we can redrilled holes and i have the block also. Can not wait for dvd. I have the bug and there is no cure but to build some more cars

Thanks Kinser!! I will asking alot of dumb questions so get ready! Just wondering about the oil never done that before so i have alot to figure out. I am in Louisiana so might get so of that rajun cajun voodoo out! HA HA HA! Chout-em Chout-em!
