What are the different approaches you take when prepping for oil vs. graphite?

Do you have dedicated wheels and axles based on oil or graphite?

Can you interchange from oil to graphite and vice versa and what are your re-prepping steps?

There are hundreds of posts on the subject already... please use the search function...
That is part of the problem - with a topic and thread this large it becomes impossible to sift through all of the opinions seeking a source of truth. Trust me, I've done the searching and walked away with less answers than when i started.

Just my 2 cents-I prep my wheels and axles mostly the same for oil and graphite. This may be overkill as many don't go as high in grit for graphite. The only difference in prep is that I burnish for graphite and use different axle spray for graphite than oil.

My wheels are either used for graphite or for oil I don't switch.

You can clean a wheel used with oil and than use for graphite. I would NOT clean a graphite wheel and use for oil.

Thanks, Castoro appreciate your input. Do you know why you shouldnt resue oil wheels with graphite?

There are different techniques and variables at play to prepping wheels and axles either way. Knowing how to work with those variables and developing those techniques is what separates the fast racers from the really fast racers. Switching between graphite and oil with the same set of axles and wheels will just add a whole bunch more variables to that mix. Good prep technique is hard enough to figure out. Believe me, I'm getting closer, but I'm still not there. Trying to use the same set of axles and wheels both ways will only make that more complicated.

You can clean wheels that have been used for oil than use with graphite, but you cant go back afterwards. I prefer to keep separate wheels for each. Not sure that you will be able to get 100% of the graphite out.

I think I disagree with you on this one Anthony. Clean the bores and hubs with a plastic polish and the clean with dawn. Then you can go from graphite to oil in my opinion

Have you tested it? I have reprepped graphite wheels and gotten a clean swab after cleaning out but would think the graphite/moly gets embedded pretty good.

Now I want a poll! Or a microscope to check.

I have always wondered if this might work? The only thing keeping me from trying it was the fear of opening the bores up? I always thought you could completely get rid of the graphite and Moly, but how far would you need to go and how large would the bores be when done??? I really don't know????

All my above likes are for purpose. So here I go. From a newbie stand point that wants to dip a toe in and try to race at the leagues. GO FOR IT. YOU WILL GET SPANKED ANYWAY. NOTHING TO LOOSE WITH TONS TO GAIN. If you want to run oil as a starting, to practice, to test, to try and beat your best graphite times.....go for it. I typically would not share my Knob Hill research. Rease is right. If you want to reprep graphite for oil follow his steps. DERBYBOYS is 100% right for Competition Speed they are trash. If you have some cuts that you spent good money on and will not be running graphite again and want to test the waters. Do it. Take notes. And once you have the cash or time or desire to pick up noticible speed recut some new Ws or purchase your best class wheels on from one of the fine vendors selling cuts these days.

Btw....lol....I know if you are cutting your own wheels there is 110% no reason to run trashed wheels other than test and personal satisfaction of knowing....duh
