Anyone tried Zinsser 1,2,3 primer as a wood sanding sealer?

I bought a can, but after watching their own promo vids on Youtube, I'm afraid! The spray looks splattered/splotchy/more like textured, popcorn ceiling paint, than a primer. Does it lay flat? Anyone know?

I dont know about Zinsser, but if you have not already hit the search bar, and where you see "keywords" type in primer. A whole lot of stuff will come up. I paint big cars for a living, so if you want to know about paint ask a way. If not thats ok too. Good luck!

For woods like balsa you don't what a water or oil base primer. A lacquer base is the best.

on basswood or poplar it would be fine.

Rocket is a wealth of information, but it really depends on what you want your car to look like. Lacquer is OK, (IMO) but...it shrinks, and it continues to shrink, so the wood grain continues to show. Also, if you use lacquer I would stay with lacquer. It does look good at first and will last for a little while. I would not think you are building a car out of Balsa??? When I painted my little cars, I always used water borne...primer and paint and a urethane based clear coat. But those days are long gone, I use vinyl and a sharpie now...much easier!

(On balsa fenders)I rub it with my finger to push it into the grain,(in the primer coats) then lighty sand after its dry, then paint. /images/boards/smilies/idea.gif

I used it this year on my scout cars because a painter were I worked suggested it to me. You have to shake the can extremely well because it contains a lot of solids in it. It lays nicely and sands perfectly smooth. But the key to it is shaking the can very well. After sanding it clean the surface with some denatured achool. Not a lot very little it will soften the top coat and allow the next coat to lay nicely. The stuff will coat just about anything including balsa. As with any paint light coats is the key

For balsa, my preferred sealant of choice is CA glue (superglue). Spread a light coat over it, and it seals and hardens very nicely. Then you can sand it to a nice finish.

Thanks guys! I'll give the Zinsser a shot, if I don't like it, I'll sand it off. My G'Son wants a glass finish Blue car with clear gloss. 2 weeks till race day, I'm painting this weekend.
Any last minute paint tips? Please let them fly... I want it to win, and look COOL!

I really like U-Pol clear coat. I picked it up at an auto paint store. It dries very fast, I spray about 5 coats in one evening with a very light sand between. here is a link to what I'm talking about. It looks like glass when it drys.

Thanks Everyone. While the Zinsser hides top/bottom grain, it doesn't seal "End Grain" very well.
(See my new post in, Ask The Pros.)
I'm a newby, and open to suggestion, Please let me know what I'm doing wrong!
I might consider a "Baked" car prior to primer/paint, in order to gas it off, prior to primer/paint.
I caught the mistakes early, and have 2 weeks to fix... Please HELP!
