Good morning!
Way back when the dirt was new (47 years ago) when I was a cub scout, the pinewood derby's had 2 "wooden" axles that attached to the body, so you could do a narrow profile body, much like a formula 1 race car, then you attached the wooden axles to the body to meet the width requirement, then attached the wheels with nails. However, as I have started helping my "K-Kub" son build his first pinewood derby, I have noticed that this luxury is no longer afforded the builder.
Yes, I know this process may be a bit more complex for a cub scout to do himself, but I was always taught that the building of a pinewood derby was a "father-son" bonding endeavor. Such a modification would still be within the spirit of the rules.
Would such a modification be legal and acceptable under today's rules? I have not seen anything that would prohibit such a modification!
Thank you for your advice!
Ed
