I have searched the forum looking for how deep to drill the axle holes, but haven't been able to find the answer. The main question is... when drilling the canted holes with the Silver Bullet how far is to far?
I put the axle in a wheel and lay it on the block and mark the beginning and end of the point. (Dont forget to add a washer if you run them) Then i'll grind off half the end of the axle (makes it easy to push out) then i'll drill out that area to about double the axle size.
Thanks guys for the response. Since I haven't yet drilled holes with the Silver Bullet I didn't want to ruin my sugar pine block. A simple test of drilling the kit block would tell me how far is to far.
I should be posting this in "lessons learned"...because this taught me not to loan out my tooling any more. What kills me is that there are two holes there. Did you not figure out you were too far the first time? The other thing that kills me is that he asked to borrow it again after he returned it to me with the damage the first time.
Yes, he was drilling too close to the bottom of the block. I should have known Reyn was heading for trouble when he started talking about wanting to use my Silver Bullet with the relieve cuts in the rails so he could drill close to the bottom of the block.
I like helping people, but stuff like this and a couple of other incidences make me wonder some times.

Looks more of a sign of drill bit not chucked high enough. As well as some nasty toe. It is possible to use the bullet with original slots. My experience is it's easier to drill then make slots.
If he was actually square when he started, a HSS bit can bow that much also.
