I noticed a set of axles I polished a while ago starting to oxidize (they were more a test than for use). Do you guy coat them with anything if you are not going to spay them with jig right away or should I prep them right after they are polished? Also if graphite is to be used how can they be protected then? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. I sat in the corner for a while after my rant about being on my own. We'll see if it's to early to ask a question after such a lame post before.

My guess would be that your axles are Xposed to the air??? I keep mine in a zip lock bag or some kind of tuperware container..HINT...no matter what you do I would suggest that you make a note on the zip lock bag or whatever on what the axles are!!! polished ready to race, not polished, lubed, size, etc. It is too easy to forget... just a suggestion though...

I have had some luck with spaying them with W-D 40 and storing them in a plastic bag . Also I spray a lot down into the bag, and summerge them keeping them away from any air. That's if your talking about zinc coated BSA axles. You don't have to worry about it if talking about stainless steel like DD4H has on his store site, my DD4H axles never rust.......SPIRIT........I would polish them up again when you are ready to use them however.

Spirit, I thought DD4H's axles had some iron content? They are listed as being magnetic on the website. I have a couple I leave out all the time but I never noticed oxidation on them.

Good idea on the labeling Chief!

I've never had any of the DD4H axles oxidize. I keep the prepped ones in a small ziploc bag and yes, Chief, labeling is always good. I think spraying them down with jig or anything that seals or coats them would be great at preventing any oxidation as opposed to nothing at all.

Yes Bracketracer, DD4H has some iron content . And you are right they don't seem to rust at all. Only the BSA zinc coated or non stainless ones , are the ones you must protect. Non of John's stainless axles ever rust for me.....SPIRIT.......

Thanks. I have not noticed this on the other sets I've made. I actually had them in a plastic bag so I will pay more attention (maybe there was moisture in the bag?). Very cool on the labeling Chief. And yes this is on the zinc coated Pinecar parts, specifically the one piece axles. I looked through some on the nails I prepped and saw nothing. Thanks again to all n happy holidays.
