I just watched the wheel prep video on johns site for the Black Ice polishing kit that I bought and here is my question.. Is there an axle prep video ? Is the process shown in the $50 DVD shown on his website? I think I have the general process down but there are just small things like in between grits what are people doing to clean each grit off? After the sanding and polishing with the next level I understand that placing glass cleaner on them is the way to go and then spray jig or max pro.... but how long do you put the glass cleaner on for - let it dry or wipe it off? how long before placing the Jig ( my understanding with the jig is spray - shake- dry for 10 min). Is the selvyt cloth being used in the axle process or just the wheel process?

Kind of unrelated ? In between races are you wiping your wheels with a cloth to get any dirt off from the track? If so any suggestions as to what to use and how to do it? My dad told us just to wipe them on our scout shirt as we turned them... but obviously I'm scared this will really scratch the wheels. Any suggestions? Thanks

Glass cleaner on axles? This might be a new one to me. You can use Pledge Furniture polish on your axles if (and only if) you're running graphite. If you're using Pledge, you'll want to spray the axles, let it sit 15 minutes or so, then wipe off the haze to leave a thin film behind.

If you're running oil, instead of Pledge, you want to use Jig or Max-Pro. With Jig and MP, you don't need to wipe. Just spray, shake, let sit 15 minutes and use.

For cleaning wheel treads between races, I have heard that a Magic Eraser works very well.

After polishing my axles to the desired point I clean with 91 % alcohol and then after I have blown dry I spray glass cleaner on the axles and wipe clean with a lint free cloth. Blow the axles off really good and check to make sure nothing is left behind from the previous process and then spray the jigaloo on.

I've been meaning to post a question regarding the Magic Eraser: I used one dry recently to clean off the tread. It left behind little bits of Magic Eraser on the wheel (like using a pencil eraser on paper).

  • Are people still using the Magic Eraser, or have they moved on to the next latest-greatest thing; like the wife's silk blouse?
  • Is the Magic Eraser being used wet or dry?
  • Follow it up with a microfiber cloth (or what?) to remove the eraser bits?

Haha that was a good one! I was thinking maybe just an e cloth or some other type of microfiber cloth for like cleaning eyeglasses- would that work?

So I saw one person zz racing comfirm the use of the glass cleaner on the axles anyone else do this? When Using oil of course.

Ah yes thank you bracketracer! I knew I had read it somewhere but couldn't remember where I had gotten the idea... Made me kinda nervous when vit k said he never heard of that before.

Is there a particular brand / type glass cleaner one should use? Is it still recommended to use Pledge (for graphite) or Jig-a-Loo (for oil) afterwards?
I was also wondering this - about the brand or does it matter? John told me to do the glass cleaner and then the jig-a loo for oil

Just because I haven't heard of something doesn't mean it's not legit. I haven't heard of a lot of things. :)

That said it doesn't sound like the glass cleaner makes the axles any more polished or slick. It just sounds like glass cleaner is the product of choice to remove residual polish before the application of Jig.

I hear ya VK - I just assume everyone on here knows more than me - I know you've been around a lot longer than me. I just do what everyone tells me haha until I get some more experience and try and venture out with my own ideas

Just use one that doesn't leave a residue. Your spouse would probably appreciate it if you'd try out different glass cleaners on every window and mirror in the house....as long as you don't use her silk blouse! ;)

Yes, you can still use Pledge or Jig afterwards as long as your ruleset allows it.

Hahaha, no, that's not me. It's some cosplayer dude who was riding around on a little motorized kart at some Anime convention and doing the "Luigi Death Stare" after pelting folks with shells.

I only wish I could be that cool.

Yes, I use your wife's silk blouse to clean the wheels.

(Sorry - you threw that hanging curve ball out there - I just had to swing at it)

Funny thing... when the boys come over to work on cars, and I tell them about graphiting each night the week before the race, I tell them they really want to protect the table and furniture because graphite gets everywhere... A good cover is mom's wedding dress or her newest best towels... :D

When the moms are there, they shoot a look at me for some odd reason.
