First time poster, been reading a lot on here and haven't found anything relating to this topic.

I'd like to use the bearings shown here http://www.maximum-velocity.com/bearings.htm

Questions:

Has anyone here used these before? If so, what was your experience?

Installing them, how did you use a lathe for the wheel bore? I'd like to use some of the high end BSA wheels offered by such reputable sites as Derby Dudes, Max-Velocity or DerbyDad4Hire. Not sure if any of these places will modify the wheel bore for debut figured it was worth bringing up the topic.

Thank you for checking this out, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction!

Yikes. Not sure that's the method I would use.

The first question I have is what are you building this for? Are you required to have the fat wheels? It seems to me that anything that would allow bearings would also allow razor wheels.
Not to sound like a shill or anything, but John has everything you need in his store. Just click the DerbyDad4Hire link in the left pane of this forum.

Yes, I have a couple of sets. I was unable to get good results because the wheels wobbled because each wheel has only one bearing. Actually I want to continue testing these, but I won't be spending any time on them this year. Incidentally, these would only be legal in the Unlimited class of league racing. These bearings don't fit the UNLM wheels currently available, so you would have to find someone that is really good with a lathe to make you wheels from scratch. Possibly DD4H, QT, or 5Kids.

I used them before. They were no faster than DD4H's oil process! I ended up adding a second bearing to each axle to keep the wheels from wobbling but it hardly picked up any speed. I swapped the wide wheels for acrylic razors for the car I was building.

Thanks for the info, I think going an Oil route my be better. My Derby rules state we have to use BSA wheels so unfortunately the razor wheels would draw too much attention. that said, what the heck do I need from DD4H in order to go the best oil route? Seeing a lot of interesting products, just not sure what I actually need to get fast and whip @$$.

The best way to give advice is share the rules so we can point you in the right direction. First and foremost you must order his DVD, that alone will assist you in your goals.

Cool, consider it ordered. As far as rules, the only thing they check stringently is if the car weighs 5 oz. Also need to use wheels that at the very least appear to be stock from the presence of the words on the outside of the wheel.

Along with the video, what other products should I order? I'd like to get this all in one order so I have plenty of time to get the car dialed in. Race isn't till July but, as I'm sure you all know, that time goes pretty damn quickly.

Hey awesome! This is the perfect list for me, appreciate the help.

StLRacer, are you doing the Coolfire event? I haven't seen a date for it this year but I recall it was July last year.

There was a video posted of the crazy track they use HMH. Wood, two hills, cars fly off the end of the track into a box. Lemme see if I can find it again.

It's open to anyone who can pay the entry fee! lol

That's probably the sharpest produced Pinewood Derby video that I've ever seen.

That said, the track shape and the jumping cars at the end makes me cringe.

Was that a real event?

Coolfire Media hosts the event so that explains why the video is so well done.
The theme last year was "Wolves of Wood Street". They had made a parody of the Wolves of Wall Street that was hilarious but it's been set to private now. Sorry!

Scroll down here, see if you recognize any of their other work:
