Times for the BASX class (didn't check the other classes) had winning times last year in the 2.97 range and this year winning times are in the 2.94 range. Whats behind the improved times (think I read it might be due to a new starting gate) but was just curious.

Yes it is all in the gate. The gate is now a gravity fall with no springs, so that is why the times are faster across the board.

I know when a new class is introduced it takes a while for guys to figure out where the best places are to find speed. I noticed midway into the series, in any league, someone usually gets it figured out and times drop dramatically. It happens all the time in every class. So maybe part of it is the gate, but I doubt all of it is.

The springs move the gate faster, thereby starting the timer slightly sooner resulting in a longer elapsed time.
Another thing to consider is the slam of the spring that could send a vibration through the track.
