I have several questions on setting up a bearing car, specifically of the wheels.

1. Is there a preferred inside/ outside to the wheel hub?
2. Is there a preferred wheel base (left to right) or is this car/builder specific?
2a. Axle shoulder to body edge?
3. Can you adjust steer by using axle as handle or will this bend axle?
4. Do we keep the bearings tight between axle shoulder and tube or do we leave a small space.

Any help would be great, Thanks
John

I have several questions on setting up a bearing car, specifically of the wheels.

1. Is there a preferred inside/ outside to the wheel hub? I run my cars with "hubs in" on rear and "hub out" on front. I have played with hubs out on rear and never seen anything showing that it's better.
2. Is there a preferred wheel base (left to right) or is this car/builder specific? As far as how far away from the rail the wheels are? If you have the "hub out" on front and the "hubs in" on rear you will be fine. You just don't want the rear wheels to rub.
2a. Axle shoulder to body edge? I always make mine so that the large diameter of the axle sticks out about .025". Just enough to keep the bearing from rubbing the body.
3. Can you adjust steer by using axle as handle or will this bend axle? I would only touch the larger diameter of the axle for steer. I actually grind flats on my front axle and use a wrench to adjust the steer.
4. Do we keep the bearings tight between axle shoulder and tube or do we leave a small space. You don't want too much slop but you don't want it tight enough to rub the bearing. I just see how the wheel spins and play around till I get a real nice spin. I also put a drop of super glue on the tubing once I have it where I want it so that it won't move in shipping. You can easily scrape the glue off with a razor blade when you want to pull the wheels off later.

Any help would be great, Thanks Hope this helps you out John. Good luck to you bud.
