Beefing up the axle hole w/CA

If one was to ream an axle hole to say 0.0915" or 0.092", then burnish thin gap filling CA glue into the circumference of the hole, let dry and then re-ream. Wouldn't the glue soak into the grain leaving the hole beefier and less prone to deformation which may lessen any wood compression/ axle deflection and prevent the axles loosening up after time? Seriously considering trying this but wanted to ask for feedback in case I'm overlooking anything in case it's a no no. One thing that worries me is this may change the dampening effects, the plain wood may soak up any wheel vibrations while the added glue may deflect the vibrations back into the wheel.

Hey Eccentric,

I have wondered about this same thing.

There are a couple of cars that I built that I am sure are not aligned right.

I am determined to re-drill them so I will let you know what happens.

Could be that there will be some serious micro vibrations.

Good deal Laserman, looking forward to the results, maybe add some baking soda to really beef er up. It sure would suck if our cars micro vibrations resonated at such a frequency that all he!! broke loose

Just thinking out loud here. iike the idea of Beefing up the whole. If you made the whole hard, then it would offer no compression to hold the axle tight. you when then need something else to hold the axles in. Not saying good or bad here, just see an issue.

Or what about just drilling a bigger hole and filling with epoxy or something then drilling the correct size right into the epoxy?

I've used ca. to tighten up loose axle holes. 1 drop on a needle and smear it around in the hole, let dry and chase with a drill bit then axle with the head cut off. Seems to work ok.

To tighten up a loose axle hole I use a small drop of water in the hole. It raises the grain of the wood and it dries out. No problems.

Cool trick!

Lots of good ideas!
Nice plan of attack Resullivan, I'll have to try that on a Royal Ranger build, the dowels being 3/8" I could drill it out to 3/16" and fill with epoxy.
Thanks guys

Epoxy is great glue but I would be afraid in the small amount that is added there is not enough dia to drill and not chip or crack out the wall of the epoxy... ( it does keep alot of air pockets and takes time to get them out) Just my experience with it in the past joining ply and balsa wood together.....

Acraglas? Never even heard of the stuff Greg, looks like it might work though. Thanks for the tip.

JBD- I like the idea of wood glue, seems like it wood soak in a bit more than CA glue before setting up. Lots of good ideas, thanks again guys!

Hey Eccentric,

Just here to do a little yapping like a little dog does.

I like the looks of that Acryglas too. Thought I heard them say that they put metal shavings in it in the video.

I remember this other stuff for casting called Alumilite.

From the few things I drilled out for rears:

The density of acrylic made it really touchy.

It doesn't necessarily need a set screw, but it is easy to relax the hole a bit too much.

As you know, wood is nice for that forgiveness.

My personal thoughts are set screws all the way. I mean, why not? A little extra effort, but barely.

This little stunted runt of a puppy dogs ears just perked up- thanks for throwing out yet another bone to the pack. I too am starting to gain a tremendous amount of respect for set screws, ideally speaking. For a bit of detail, hollow set screws to pass air for ease of installation with a pre-beefed axle hole sure sounds like a sweetheart little setup if ya ask me

Thanks again Greg for the Acraglas tip/images/boards/smilies/wave.gif/images/boards/smilies/thumb.gif

"hollow set screws". I had that stuck in my head for a few days and I was wondering who I heard it from. I had never heard of them before, but I pictured them and just googled em.

This is almost perfect for the reversed axle car. Thanks so much!

If I can get one with a set screw already in the side, then I am really in business.

This can probably be modded easily.

Betcha Bracket knows where to get them. LOL
