Greetings,
Our pack is in the process of writing new rules and adding inspections for our Cub Scout race. Our preference is to write rules very similar if not identical to the NPWDRL Box Stock rules, basically everything must be used from the pinewood derby car kit or official BSA products. We are also considering allowing aftermarket axles since they are hard to inspect without disassembling the car.
Last year, we had a few parents point out that certain cars used wheels that they felt were against the rules. Luckily these cars didn’t perform good so we didn't have to make the incredibly tough decision to disqualify the car of a young builder. Our thought is to make the rules more specific and add pre-race wheel and axle inspections if possible. Last year at the pre-race inspection, all cars were weighed and then placed into a box to make sure it fit the length and width requirement and the inspector took a quick glance at the wheels.
How are other packs, districts and councils inspecting wheels and axles to ensure that they meet their race rules?
How are wheels and axles inspected at the NPWDRL Box Stock race or similar classes?
I would appreciate any input.
Thanks,
Jimmy
