Box Stockathon in May!

Sounds like we're getting a good number of folks committing to sending in Box Stockers for the May 6th race. You (yes you) know you want a piece of the action too! Sweep your hand across your workbench and I'm pretty sure you'll come up with enough parts for a B.S. car! Put 'em together and let's raaaaaace!

Oh yeah, and Mr. Chips, don't forget, you're sending in too, right? I wouldn't want you to *cough cough* forget! ;) Perhaps you'd prefer a more formal invitation..?

Cheerio and well met, Chippie old boy. I do so hope that you shall endeavor to piece together a mobile for which you might see fit to deploy with much haste on that fine old track of Joel's. Toodles!

So then question... Is both Box Stock and BASX running May 6th?
Still considering sending in my first proxy and wondering instead of going after Street Stock like I originally planned I might be better off starting out in the easier classes and just slow down and see how my builds do on a more restrictive rule set. Better off going in slow and enjoying a more simple build than rushing in on a more complicated build and jumping in the deep end with my eyes closed.

Both Box Stock and BASX are running.

BASX is probably the simplest build, since aero is restricted so much. Just bear in mind that you'll want purchased parts to (wheels and axles) to be competitive.

Box Stock actually potentially requires more work on your part, but the parts are limited to plain ol' BSA wheels and axles, so it's mucho cheapo. :)

Hmmm me likes mucho cheapo! Thx a bunch for the info VK.
Don't really mind doing fenders. I enjoy shaping soft wood. The hard core wheel prep and mods such as taking the outer step down (tho is that still legal for BASX?) will be more work for me personally than doing fenders. Looks like Box Stock will be a less involved build for me and cheaper is the name of the game for me right now.
Is Box Stock going to be run all season in MOTM too?

You can work the inner and outer hubs for BASX. For Box Stock, they have to be left unmodified.

Box Stock will presumably run all season. Of course, it won't ever accumulate points towards MOTM.

It is worth pointing out that, compared to the cost of shipping and entry fees, buying parts for a BASX car is pretty trivial, especially if you compete multiple times a year. For me, the appeal of Box Stock really comes from building a car very close to actual Scout rules and seeing how much speed can be squeezed out of parts that aren't professionally improved. I guess what I am trying to say is that you should race the class that excites you the most. :)

good point VK. I am actually looking more into shipping rates and pricing. Chance it might be more than I can do right now anyways so I might not be racing proxy regardless. At least not for a few.
Milk & food for the kiddos comes first. :D

Use the United States Postal Service flat rate boxes. It is by far the most affordable way to ship. I shipped two cars in a medium box to Nats. Total round trip cost was approximately $32. They boxes say the arrive in two days.

I hope you get a chance to ship a car. Vitamin K is correct that the easiest car to build is a BASX. I will be shipping two Box Stocks and two BASX in May.

Greatly appreciate that info! I want to believe you me. Probably go with Box Stock if I do to cut as much cost as possible. Spending that again on axles & wheels and well... without getting too personal I need to keep things on the mucho cheapo side if you get my meaning. Just a Derby car kit seems much cheaper and I dont mind making fenders. BUT... When it speaks of Derby kits and the parts in them only what brand kit is that? I am assuming it's the official BSA kit?

You are correct. Use the BSA pinewood derby kit. Box Stock is the most affordable class to run. Also you don't have to worry about damaging the wheels if you are still perfecting your wheel prep. You can also send in your sons scout car too. It should qualify as a box stock.

Re: Shipping - Get an account at USPS.com (free). You can either ship flat rate, or measure your box, weigh it, and see what first class costs. I shipped three cars to the last race in my own box for $25 round trip, which included insurance. Distance and weight will vary the expense for non-flat rate. On the plus side of the flat rate boxes is there is pretty much no weight limit.

Box Stock's requirements are really geared toward the wheels and axles. As long as the car meets the requirements, no one really cares about the source of your wood.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Would love to ship my kids cars in (after a re-tune of course ;) ) but they are technically illegal. They are the Awana kits. Not BSA. The wheels even say Awana. I actually like the Awana axles. No marks to grind off.
But that being said I probably can't race them in Box Stock I presume?

Thanks for the "official" invite. Not sure why you are speaking like a jolly 'ol chap. In the event I can put one together, you and I should go ahead and race for PINKS! Are you willing to put that much skin in the game?

If you really want to race with us, I'll help you get cars to Joel/NPWDRL for a few races.
whoa... ok now that really is kind of you, seriously. Is it sad that pride steps in the way of accepting help when offered? lol
I do really want to race but medical issues with the folks just came up and build time will be at a minimum for me for a few. Hopefully by the time I can get a car together though i'll be good to go. But I will certainly keep your offer in mind tho. Thanks again man. I really do appreciate that. really.

VK is apparently unable to post here, so asked that someone post his reply:

Hey Chips, good to finally hear from you. I'd respond in the original thread, but, alas, I have come under the wrath of the ban hammer. I'm going to politely decline the PINKS format, as I just don't have any interest in wagering the loss of car materials right now. I have enough setbacks on my own without having to worry about that. However, if you still come race a Box Stocker, I'm fairly certain that the field will still be small enough for our cars to at least run one heat together, hopefully.

Yeah, you are correct. To race your existing car in Box Stock, you'll have to make the (painful) switch to BSA axles, as well as the wheels. Same for BASX, but for that class you are best off purchasing some professionally turned wheels and axles.

Street Stock is the first class that doesn't require BSA wheels.
