building a tunning board

New to derby racing and tring to take in all of this AWESOME info people have provided on this Forum. Is there a video or any instructions out there for building a simple tunning board? Thanks, you people are awesome to share your knowledge, I have came from a stock car racing background and to get this kind of help from people would cost big $$$

In my case, I went to Home Depot, bought a 2' x 8' piece of plywood. raised one end 2 inches. drew a line down the center, at the bottom marked one inch increments on each side of the center line. I then used a level to make sure the board was level at all places.

I bought the 3/4-in x 12-in x 4-ft White Melamine Square-Edged Shelf board. It is also available in 8-ft lengths. I then drew lines for the start edge and the amounts of steer on the other end. Just don't let your son use it a work table. I have to get a new board because it has super glue all over it now. The 4-ft is only about 8 dollars, so not that much invested.

I used junk stuff they were throwing out at work for the legs..........I used a hollow core interior door for the base, put down a custom made graphic made by a fellow racer, bought a piece of tempered glass and set that on top of it all. I used the cheapest trim I could find at Lowes and capped the 4 sides off. Put a thick sponge 2" past the finish line and called it GOOD! I also lined the two long inside edges with clam shell moulding.................If a car would go to the extreme sides, the wheels would hit the moulding not the vertical walls and wipe out the axles........I did this for the needle class not the big axle classes./images/boards/smilies/thumb.gif

BTW.........the glass was the most expensive part to the project, but it is a must have to tune properly.

Thanks, what would be a good starting point as far as the amount of steer within that 4'? Not sure if track size matters but it is a 42' Besttrack. And does it matter, or is it easier to use the front right wheel or the front left wheel to do the steering?

8" over 6' is a safe steer for a scout race. If you have a 1/2" - 3/4" COM you should not have any wiggle. I steer to the left but there are a few guys that are real fast that go to the right.

The plus to that Derrick is you can also do your makeup!

Reso is right, that should be pretty good for steer, but every car is different and with experience you will find that out!
