Thought I'd post this for entertainment. This was photo of top 4 finishers in a recent race. Right to Left, 1st place myself, 2nd my oldest son, 3rd my youngest son, 4th my dad. My dad and I finished 1st and 2nd in adult race wasn't close though. My sons finished 1st and 2nd in kids race about 3/4 car length different. No trophies...was just for fun and to support a missions trip. Got candy bars and matchbox cars for prizes. after both kids and adults were done... someone requested a family race so we did 2 races as a family.
My car has a burnt finish, I literally torched it. Ran out of time to prep 3 cars and mine got rushed. So I figured I'd paint it with fire. Used lead and it used full weight wheels other than truing and hub work. I made and lame attempt at jig/oil/wax from what I could gather by following various forums for the past few months. Picked the straightest axles and smallest wheel bores. But what I got mostly right with it was the drill job. Tuning took about 2 min... would of been less but I had to put a very small bend in front axle to get needed drift. Needed to tighten up the clearance on the guide pin though as it allowed too much front end movement on the rough track.
My oldest sons car actually won his awana race earlier this year... so his was easy. one puff of graphite on race day and done. Car only had about 8 runs on it prior. This one used tungsten cubes and lotsa work on the wheels to make them lighter, narrower. 1st race against me he lost but was less than 1/2". I was on slowest lane, he was on fastest lane. The 2nd race he lost by 3/4 car length. as he was then on the slowest lane and I was on a semi slow lane. but my car ran about the same time on both lanes.
My youngest son is not old enough to race awana but is anxious. I did the best I could with his parts. bores ended up being way to big and axles too small. It is a revell bsa kit originally built a few years ago. I redrilled it, reweighted it with lead, worked the wheels and axles, but couldn't quite get enough out of it to catch my older son's car. Looking back I should have just preped new awana wheels and axles for it. He will get a whole new car for his first year of awana's
My dad's car... I'm not sure what all he did but he built two cars. one with cant and one without. At first the cant'd one was about half a car faster on my track. but He ended up racing the one without cant because it gained over a car and a half length once he lubed with my graphite. When I checked his alignment after the race he had toe in (very even) on the non-canted car. So I'm guessing... had he got his drill job better on that one, he would have been right up there with my oldest son and I. And his attempt at cant'ing on the other car didn't really do much as I couldn't get a piece of paper under the wheel edges. He was happy though as they were much better builds than what he built for me when I was in scouts as a young'n.
