The Cub Scout that I was helping with his car just had their race. His car blew everybody away and he never lost. He put a lot of work into the car and actually was willing to learn so I gave him more tips then I usually do. And he had a fast car. However because of the way they kept track of the lanes and the racers they got all messed up so in the end they gave him third place. I feel bad for him. His parents talked to them about it but they didn't overturn their ruling. They are lucky I had to work today I could see if the other cars were even close but it was a blowout. Maybe I am just to competitive but that made me mad.

I hate all the point system scoring. What you described doesn't make sense. For our district race last year they went by time throwing out the slowest time. This year they changed to points scoring like golf with lowest points wins. What kept me nervous the whole race was that all it would take is 1 bad run or crash to screw him even though he was crushing them on time.
this kids car beat the first place car by a foot and a half. i cant see anyone accepting the first place trophy knowing they got spanked that hard. the scout leaders did admit they screwed up the numbers when totaling them and he should have one. so they said they will get him a bigger trophey. but its the awards cerimony that those kids like and he we jipped. oh well he will just have to smoke em again next time and there is an adult race on the 28 he can go spank the grown ups that will be sweet revenge.

Just saw the same thing happen, but the parents of the 3rd place finisher were kind enough to switch out for their 3rd and give the 1st to the rightful owner - class act. Crazy thing was, the officials would not admit they made a mistake - didn't even ask the kids what place they got which would have been a good first step to resolving the issue. The kids know how their car placed... They just kept saying there is no way they were wrong.

It is funny how in youth soccer or other games where they don't keep score the kids end up obsessing over who is really winning even more.
If it was as obvious as you described then I am sure years from now that is what he will remember. It will also give him some good motivation to do better next year making the victory feel even sweeter.

The council in Tucson, AZ has a well organized lealgue down through the district and Packs, even to the point where they only allow the first through third place scouts in the various districts race in council. AND the trophies are huge, all the way down to 3rd place.
Everything is great except the Council race:
1 - They use a wooden track (every other district uses aluminum)
2 - They have no timer, so they use/have four guys at the finish line to pick the winners, i.e. one assigned to each lane.
3 - The winners are decided by the point system, making the placing of 2nd thru 5th very questionable.
There have been numerous complaints over the years, but the council race has been run by the same Scout Leader since the days of Methuselah, and he is too deeply entrenched for anyone to dare to force a change.
My grandson's car came in 4th this year. I was easy to see that he should have been 2nd. So geht es!

A screw-up similar to this at district cost my friend's Tiger a win 2 years ago.
Tigers are little kids, remember. My friend's Tiger had used one of the numbers in the decal kit on his car, which was pretty fast. They have the kids stage their own cars. They call out the lane #'s, but at check in they write a number on the bottom of the car with a Sharpie.
So first round, they said "xxx in lane 5" (6 lane track). Then for the next round, they said "car # x in lane 6"...so his Tiger looked at the number he put on TOP of his car, which was a lower number, and went and sat down....when he should have been in lane 6, and no official noticed. And apparently no other kid noticed that they were all kicked one lane over. They ran the round, and a slower car got counted for him.
I noticed and told them...they pow-wowed for a few minutes and said they straightened it out..but they didn't, and the slower car's run still got counted for my friend's kid. What they should have done is start over at Round 2, which is where the mistake was made.
Kid got 2nd, but he had the fastest car on the clock by a comfortable margin.
