concept of oil

Being that part of my job involves research, this new breakthrough sounds very interesting...however, as a relatively new racer, I was wondering if someone could give me the quick overview for how the oil process and the current stuff we use works with the oil....just a background....which will make the R&D process and figuring out new ideas more efficient!

Right now its silicone based jig on the axel, wax on the wheel bores (red rocket) and then John's oil. I gather from other posts the concept would be the oil makes an interface between the axel and bore such that the wheel itself is gliding over a thin layer of oil. As such, as I believe another recent post stated, one component holds the oil and the other slides over it.

Just to be sure, is it the jig silicone stuff that holds the oil to the surface and the wax bores slide over it or the opposite....or am I just way off and both surfaces slide with the oil in between, or some other concept....

I just want to make sure I have the basic mechanics and physics of the process and the theoretical concept behind the jig, wax, oil before I start delving into further R&D or to try and figure out what QT and John have apparently discovered! or even better, try to figure out my own possible processes....

oh...ive no doubt about that Kinser....considering what I would have done and bought if I didnt find this site, I think many of us newer racers certainly have a lot to thank the pro racers and other long time racers here for products and ideas and processes that are tried tested and true....

the trick for us newbies is to try and contribute now to see if there is anything else out there to improve on the current practices in place...

W&K, I don't know if one component holds or releases, what I do know is that some products work better with others. Finding the right stuff to work together and than the correct amount of it and how to use it is the R&D part.

thanks QT!

however, I guess there is no choice now though....if I want to do any type of significant testing im gona have to invest in a better track system than I have now and get a timer too.

time to raid the cookie jar.....and buy my wife something nice or take her on a trip prior to putting this stuff in my house!

I wonder if there is enough interest in pinewood racing that a hobby store could put a track up and then charge people to use it for tuning....guess id be dependent on the area one lives in....ive looked around Hawaii and even asked a hobby dealership here but nothing even close exists here.....

OK I will admit I am no expert, but I promised to post more earlier and may be able to help a bit here. Teflon/silicone on axles provides a slippery and hydrophobic (possibly oleophobic too?) coating for the nail. polishing the plastic with a substance that makes the bore smooth and harder in the process (Legend) creates 2 smooth hard surfaces to slide past each other. The DD4H oil then seems to act like liquid ball bearings between the 2 surfaces. No clue what he blends the Krytox with, but the difference is magic

..........and now QT has a new version of the process that increases the effectiveness of it. As a science teacher, the process and scientific approach that the crew here uses is truly fascinating to read about. If their efforts are like mine, it looks something like this......

Then you get to the races and get edged out by someone who did something slightly better than you did and start the process over.

Keep pushing the speed limit gentlemen and to QT......
