hey guys, my son and I are getting ready to start his car for Boy Scout. They gave us our cars with less than a month to build, so I’m trying to cram. With that being said, Im getting ready to place an order from DD4H and had a couple questions. If I order the BSA speed axles with legendary race prep, do They need any other prep (zero friction, next level), or are they good to go? Same with dynasty BASX wheels with legendary prep. Do I need red rocket or black ice? I guess I’m not sure what the legendary race prep means. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

It means they are prepped and ready to race
Awesome! So if I don’t want them to be completing race ready, I should order the “polished” axles. What is the difference between the race ready and polished?

Sorry for the questions, I have never ordered wheels or axles before. I have always used the ones out of the box. What other prep needs to be done to a polished axle?

Race prepped means they are polished and COATED with the proper products and ready to go just add lube. Polished still needs final prep work.
I’m an idiot... lol if I am running graphite, what is the final prep work? Next level? Zero friction?

Herbie33,

You and I joined about the same time I think? I have seen you lurking and reading at different times. I don't know what the new axle treatment is, but it sounds interesting. You won't be disappointed with the DD4H products!

Good luck racing ...be sure to let us know how your son does!

I think you’re right we joined about the same time. As much as I love building pinewood derby cars with my son, it’s the only time of year that we build, so my knowledge is VERY limited! I try to soak up as much as I can in the short period of time. We went from from not placing in our pack two years ago, to finding this site and DD4H products and getting 3rd at districts last year. DD4H products are unreal. My sons goal is to win districts this year, so I figured the next step is to order wheels and axles from him this year.

is the in house treatments part of the race prep treatment?

From what I read above the new "in house" treatment is included as part of the race prep. If you get the polished axles, then they do not come fully polished and no "in house" treatment.

I can't speak for what they are using as I don't know what it is. What we have found is that the treatment we use greatly extends the number of runs before time drops off. How much speed is gained????? We really don't know, but every thousands helps. We get a full 16 runs without times dropping significantly on graphite (about 0.001 or less). While this is not nearly as good as oil, it is much better than the 6-8 runs we used to get before times tanked.

Upon edit: I went back and looked at the data from last year. I misspoke earlier when I said it was only about 0.001 change. Out of the 16 runs on an 8 lane track the difference between the first and second pass in each lane were; two had a 0.004 change, another had a 0.003 change, and the rest were 0.002 or less. Several of the runs were within 2-3 ten thousands. Remember that there were different cars next to it on every pass. So that also effected how it ran.

That’s a lot of data! Lol you’ve obviously put in a lot of time and found something that works if your times don’t change much after 16 runs. I’m assuming you send your cars in for races? Our runs aren’t timed at the pack or districts so I couldn’t tell you when our car started to slow down. However, Last year was the first year that we used DD4H graphite and I’m positive that we were the only ones using it in our pack (25 cars) and we got 2nd in our den. The top two from each den (10 total) raced for the overall championship. We ended up beating the car that beat us earlier in 4 straight races to win the overall championship. I’m positive that was because while the other cars were slowing down, ours didn’t because of our graphite. This will be our first year attempting a true rail runner. I just put in our order from John, so hopefully, we will be able to tune it right as we won’t have a chance to test run it on a track before the race.

Nope, just a rookie compared to most around here. We have sent in a few cars. We sent some graphite cars just to see how they would run. After that my son built a lead weighted wedge that was our first attempt at an oil car. I also converted a couple of the graphite cars that we already had. I think I learned more by doing the conversions that by helping build an oil car from scratch. I have my first oil car just about done. Made plenty of mistakes and already know what I am going to do differently next time.

So how many races/passes do you have between any opportunity to re-lube and or clean the wheels? There is some speed to be had by how you lube and having clean wheels.

We do not have any opportunity to clean/re-lube the day of racing. Once checked in, the Scout can only touch the car to set it on the track. During our pack races we ran about 15 passes. During the districts we ran roughly 20.
