Death of Street Rod?? POLL!!!

I would like to keep the sr class. My rod is on blocks ready for new wheels. I should be able to send mine in next race. I like the challenge of 4 on the floor. I know some builders have the kit and need to complete it.

I voted for the 3-wheel touching with more body options, since I think this class should be all, or at least "most" about fun. The 4-wheel touching is just one more headache we don't need.

I for one like the SR class and I know it is a pain to run but if everyone would play fair it might be a little easier. I like the fact that it looks like a real car and it was intended to have the rivalry of the big three in mind (Chevy, Ford and Mopar). I have had troubles with the 4 on the floor but That is not what is keeping me from building...for me it is just time The LACK OF that is... Whether you keep it 4 on the floor or a three wheeler, I think you should keep the Street Rod for now...I do like only having the 3 choices of cars to build...that makes it more fun for me because I know the next racer is faced with the same challenges as me!

I have not yet built a SR, but I have been playing around with the idea. I think it would be a challenge, considering I haven't figured out the SS class yet. If the class dies off there would then be no reason to attempt this build. I will be waiting the results of the poll before I decide.

BTW, where are the bodies purchased, any particular brand that works best? ...and just my $.02 worth, 4 wheels touching for the challenge, with body options.

I'm having lots of fun with the Street Rod class! It would be a shame to do away with it. I have no complaint at all with how it's done now. Hopefully more people will send theirs in for the April race.

GravityX, these are just plain model car bodies, available just about anywhere. Rules are here: http://www.npwdrl.com/rules/streetrodrules.html

By the way, I haven't figured out Street Stock yet either. Don't let that hold you back from trying a Street Rod.

Honestly I bought the model and started, just haven't had the time to finish it. I'm all for expanding the body selections and having rail running as an acceptable method of construction.

I have just been lazy. I plan to get mine out soon. I was rushing it that past week to try to get it out. Made a huge mess with the super glue. It was a real Charlie Foxtrot.
I dont think low numbers are that big of a deal....the class only takes a few minutes to run so its not taking up much of race day. I realize there is tech-in time, but I dont think its worth killing the class.
4 wheels down is just another rule that is the same for everyone, we all have to adhere to it ... I don't think its much of an issue.
The only problem, I think, is the body choices. The GTX vs Camaro is all wrong. It should have been a 67 Impala to make it fair. And maybe an old Galaxy in the Ford camp.

I do not race this class so my opinion might not be worth anything? I think you should get back to the "Door Slammer" style class from the PDDR days. The only change would be to somehow not allow the .005" - .010" thick slot car bodies. I think that class was cool with all the different model bodies but when the slot car bodies made there way into the class, it just wasn't fair anymore. Any commercially available 1/24 model would be perfect. This would be cool because there are some guys that love Chevy's, some Fords and others Oldsmobiles. This lets the builders really enjoy a build with 1 of there favorite cars of the past. Again, this is my opinion only.

The problem that we are seeing now is the alteration of the bodies which are not to be altered in any way. Also the 4 wheels rolling, all four wheels have to be rolling at all times, not skipping, or altogether not touching. The nice thing about only having the three cars to choose from is it makes it easy to spot a altered car and keeps the playing field level. All three of the cars running now are very close in deminsions with the GTX being the longest, the funny thing about the extra length of that car is that it is all behind the rear wheels so it is not a advantage at all. This is suppost to be a fun class with everyone on a level playing field, I would hate to see it go away. But with the lack a participation, the win at all cost, and stretch the rules, unfortunately I think it doomed! which makes me very sad!

I built two SR cars both last year and this year.

I hated the four wheels touching rules.
Also hated the shorter wheel base required.
My cars didn't compete well this year, yet it took me 3 times as much time to prepare the car, compared to last year.
I was disappointed that the thin lexon bodies did not return. So much cheaper and easier to create a good car.

Maybe take a pole to see who will comitt to have an SR car for June. If no follow through, drop the class.
Its not worth it to spend all that time on a car, then race against 5 guys. No commitment, drop the class.

How about we go to 3 wheels touching. Any PRODUCTION CAR 1/25th scale model HARD PLASTIC with NO MODIFICATIONS to the body. No slot car bodies. Must use the wheel base. Might open it up to more fun if that is what this class is all about.

If we do that, I would ask that we wait until after June to make that change.

If it is opened up to different body styles, why not 1/24 and 1/25th ? - that would allow some pretty cool alternatives. I don't know how significant a different that would be since you still have the weight limit.

I think the body style issue would sort itself out after some races were run just as in the real world. The plus for us scale lovers is that we get to build our favorite car and see if we can engineer it to compete under the other existing rules win or lose.

I disagree with opening it up to different models... The competition would then become who can find the longest, most aerodynamic car with the smallest rear overhang. And then everyone would buy that model.

As to other models, an Olds 442 would fit in with the current crop. If people are lamenting a variety of builds, change the official models quarterly or semi-annually. Current model Camaro/Mustang/Challenger. WRC cars. Porsche/Ferrari/Lambo.

Of all the classes here, this is the one that really piques my interest. I love seeing the "real" cars go head-to-head. And, for me, having to run all four wheels touching isn't much of a departure from the rules I already have to work with locally...

This is the class I expect to participate in first. Looks like time to put up, huh?

I just looked up the 1970-ish Olds. AMT has a 1969 Hurst Olds in a 1:25 scale. (Hobby Lobby has it)

And here are the specs (based on Google searches for dimensions on the real cars) for each:

ModelWheelbaseLengthScale WheelbaseScale Length
GTX116 in202.7 in4.64 in8.1 in
Shelby108"183.6"4.32 in7.34 in
Camaro108.0"188.0"4.32 in7.52 in
Olds 442112.0"203.2"4.48 in8.13 in

The Olds could be an overdog... /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

By the way, I like the idea of the four wheels touching. Seems that it would level the playing field as it would bring all the fish out of the water, so to speak. But, if that is an excuse given to not race this class, go ahead and lose that restriction to make it like all the other classes.
