We did it. Both my Bear and Tiger got 1st place in their District race. It was a great day. Thank all of you that generously provide tips and advice.

My Bear got 2nd place as a Tiger and Wolf to the same guy. We were determined to try our best to win 1st this year. I found this site shortly after our race last year and together we applied as much as we could to build his ladder car this year (Creeper). As I posted earlier, he won his pack Bear and Overall race, so we had our eyes on achieving our goal at Districts. The first run had me quite concerned as we were 0.03 behind our nemesis (2.33 vs. 2.36). On our next run we improved to get what turned out to be the best track time of the day (2.32). The competitions 2nd run was 2.37, so we were in it. Our last run was again a disappointing 2.36. But our competitions 3rd was even worse, so we prevailed with a 1st place finish. It was also my son's birthday, so he got a nice 1st place trophy to celebrate. As you can see from the times, this is a short track. It is a wood track that is not very well maintained showing large variation lane to lane.

My Tiger's car (Spidy) is basically identical to the Bear car and they were within 0.001 in our pack races over 6 runs. He had little competition and easily took 1st place. He gets the benefit of our learning with his brother. But the best part is that two other tigers from our pack also took 2nd and 3rd .....sweep. I spent some time with them after our pack race and made a few suggestions. They made improvements and took home trophies. A very exciting day for my son and his buddies.

Our districts run 2 tracks. I used to run the 2nd track but they found someone with a 42' Best Track for this years race. My sons, unfortunately, did not race on it. I always wanted to know how our cars would do against the standard I hear about on this site. I could never know how close we were to the infamous 3.0 sec boundary. The guy running the track was nice enough to let me do a test run in between race groups. My Bears car did a 3.09 sec, which turned out to be the fastest time of the day on that track as well. It thrilled me to be this close to 3.00 sec. I know 0.09 is pretty far away but our rules require box parts, original slots and graphite, so thinking this was pretty good.

Time to re-prep, add fenders, switch to oil and submit to a Box Stock race!!!

Awesome job dad! Cars look great. Sure your sons smiles look greater! Hope to do BS soon here too. Oh yeah you mentioned stock slots... did you chop rear off and add it to the front? The rears look pretty far back. Did ya get any build pics? Cars really look nice man, would love to see build pics.
Thanks for sharing!

I did chop the rear and move to the front. I will post some build pics when I get a chance.

Are the car covers decals that you made or purchased? They look really good.

I made the covers using the 5kids approach with mailing labels and laminating sheets. My sons picked images they liked on line and I stretched or replicated as necessary in Power Point.

I actually built the images in Power Point and got it roughly to the car size but intentionally left overlap. For example, the Creeper car started with a single Creeper square image that my son found on line. I scaled it to cover the width of the car and then repeated the image a number of times to make the car length. The Spiderman was an image I stretched within power point. The Dog was actually a kids book mark I again found on line. It has roughly the right shape, so just scaled. I can attach my power point if you want to use as a template.

I'm not able to attach the Power Point file. So, I did a screen capture, so you can see the template I used.

Thanks. I do the same thing using LG adhesive photo paper.

Can you send a link for this paper? I am looking for a lower weight solution.

Do you still need to put a laminate sheet or similar over this paper to protect from ink scratching off?

Council update: Only one of my son's could make it to Councils. My Tiger had a championship Tball game and made the tough decision to support his team. My Bear took 2nd place in Bears and 2nd place to the same guy in the Finals. It was a great day. So, not Council Champions but close.

There are some more details here:
