Enlarging Axle Holes

Let's say you drilled axle holes with a #44 drill bit (.086") and you wanted to make them bigger to accept .091" axles--usually drilled with a #43 bit.

Would the holes still be accurate if I took a #43 drill bit in a pin vise and enlarged the holes, or will that throw everything off?

Thanks,

Jim

I'm sure you will get all sorts of comments saying to "Not touch the axle hole" and I'm sure that is the best policy. However, if you really want to do it, buy a chucking straight reamer about .088-.0885 and use your pin vise, on the reamer, to enlarge the hole, carefully. Then use a .090 pin gauge to work the hole. At this point you should be in pretty good shape for your .091 axle. I have done it a few times and been satisfied with the results. If you own the pin vise, probably about $15.00 in reamer and pin.
