Fenders or no Fenders

I'm building some new cars for 2012 & these will not have fenders to add alittle more weight they're weighing 12 to 13grm.s with bodies only painted what you you guys think fenders or no fenders
hmmm

ya know, i have been driving myself nuts with the same question, anyone else chime in on this one?
if fenders are used, how big should the gap be between the fender and wheel be?

I am building mine with fenders only because,
1. I like the look of them.

2. Someone mentioned in an older thread how they can help keep your car stable if running in dirty air.

3. did I mention I like how they look?

I would also like to know what fender gap has proven to be best.

I spent an entire season testing a pure stock design with fenders and without. I came to the conclusion that rear fenders do play a role in stabilizing the car with aggressive weighting. Also after studying 2 years worth of videos, I'm not convinced they are helping in dirty air. I will also add that I have seen cars in both leagues without fenders that perform well. So if you are now more confused than before you should be
blah
.

Front Fenders....HHHmmmmm .. I have still not solved the puzzle. Every car I had them on performed poorly.. or it could have been my building skill
hmmm

ok, sounds good to me. fenders it is for DNA.
next question is has any one tried to enclose the wheel except for the bottom in a fender?
as long as the bottom was open enough for inner wheel inspection i think it would be legal.

DNA a car with the wheels inclosed by fenders would be great but during pre-race inspection the wheels could not be checked for size so you either remove a wheel or two and lose all your tuning or get a DQ. Just my thoughts.

I have always wanted to do an enclosed wheel, but the previous league said no magnets which I felt was silly. Those small rare earth magnets have been used in ultra light weight peanut scale rc airplanes for battery attachment and even to attach wing assemblies. I thought but have never tried to use those small magnets to make wheel covers that are easily removable but strong enough for racing to protect the wheel and still allow for inspection and lubrication. Sort of like wheel skirts I guess.

that would be an AWESOME thing!!
two of the small BB sized magnets with a short locating peg would be easy to do and would easily hold them on. or maybe a small hinge type pin in the front of the frender with a stop in the rear would allow the fender to be lifted forward for wheel inspection.....
hmmm

This would be cool to see. Every year new ideas and new innovations. Makes this fun!

Hey I dont know how you guys measure your wheels for size but this is what our pack uses and if you look at #4 on the scale, I think that is for wheel size measurements. This tool could be modified to use with enclosed fenders without using magnets or having to remove the fenders. I love fabricating/modifying things and I would absolutely love to see some of your cars with enclosed fenders on them. Here is a pic and a link. Just a thought?

wheels get measured from one side to the other at the widest point, and from inside to outside of the faces. the wheel can be no smaller than 7.50MM in width, and no bigger than 31MM in height. that is for the Street stock class. rules vary according to league , Scouting rules can be vauge on the matter, last year a couple of brothers were running wheels with H groves cut into the tred, they somehow passed inspection.....and were soundly beat by my boy with a legal setup. I have caught guys trying to run ultra lights as BSA stock wheels and made them swap them out before the race. the league cars and the Scout cars only have a very few things in common, and with the wheels, its only the BSA name on the side.

Oh OK. Please forgive my lack of knowledge, I have never seen a pro car with needle axles in person, only pictures. I just thought that when you turn the car upside down to inspect it you would be able to see a part of the axles whether it was stock or needle. What I had envisioned was like a fender skirt molded onto the car and with a modified tool you would be able to make certain measurements, that way you would have the cool factor of the fenders but also the ability to comply within the rules and compete...but if that is not how it works I will just chalk it up to one of my looked good on paper ideas haha. thank you for educating me!!

I just noticed John added fenders to his store, real wood not balsa! Balsa fenders are responsible for raising blood pressure and aggravation levels all over the country!!

Thank You John
