I use a table saw and a clamping sled to make sure my fingers stay attached. Had a bad experience once and I don't recommend getting your hand near the blade!

If you can't cut the entire length of the block, you can flip the block end for end and cut from the opposite direction.
Go easy on the blade. Too much pressure will make it flex.
Thanks guys, I think it will be a case of the more times i go through the process the easier it will get. the first couple times will be like a trial and error.
If you use a table saw you could make a jig that captures the thick pine block and then use the jig against the fence to keep your fingers far from the blade.
