Any one know where I could find a full size (1 3/4" x 1 1/4" x 7" ) standard SSG Sugar pine block?

I don't have any full size. You could glue a few together.

That's what I was thinking too... If you just wanted the foundation/drilling to be solid and the height for design, then just glue a standard BSA block to the top of a sugar pine block. Some wood glue and a couple clamps would do the trick.

And if that's the case, you could use a balsa block to save weight.

unenlightened derby obsessor here: What is the difference between sugar pine blocks and the BSA pine blocks? I ordered a few from John to satisfy my curiosity, but it seems to be the wood of choice. Haven't understood why though.
