Gettin' the itch again

Hey all. We're getting the itch again as we'll get our kits in November. I've been working with Superior axle jig to see if it can work for drilling those canted rear axles. It was $19.00 and has the guide holes in it to keep the bit from walking. I seem to have gotten it setup right but it's finicky because the drill table has to have an absolutely flat/smooth(like glass) surface to rest the tool on.

My boy decided to make a military Jeep this year for his derby car. We'll see how fast we can make it. He wants faux leaf springs, drive axles and shafts underneath and seats, shifters and steering wheel on top.

Have you guys discovered anything over the summer that is new or a tweak that looks interesting? I like seeing what John comes up with.
 
I saw those at John's. I haven't gotten a handle on those yet. Does it just allow more weight to the rear? The COM target of 5/8"-3/4" stays the same so how does it help?
 
I wouldn't mess with the weights. Was your son the one with the tank before then the American flag themed? He didn't want to do another aerodynamic car to beat last year's?

Yes, that was my boy. He does want an aero car again. I think we'll cut her real thin and take pics of a U.S. Mint, 1940's army jeep he has. We'll take pics from top, sides and bottom. We'll size them to fit the car like we did with the flag theme last year then print them onto photopaper. We'll epoxy them onto top, sides and bottom. Then we'll clear coat with automotive enamel. I found that the epoxied photopaper stiffens up the car with minimal weight.

A couple preliminary photos have looked OK so far. The bottom actually looks the coolest with oil pan, steering, axles, trans and t-case. Doesn't look as weird being distorted. Plans may change though.

Thanks for the confidence boost laserman. I think the stars lined up just right for us last year which led to a fast car. It helped that we found the secret dance that needs to be done prior to starting the build then again prior to alignment.

** The other secret that nobody talks about is this: light a fire with rare branches from the whatchamacallit tree only found in southeast Asia. As the build progresses, stop now and then to wave the car back and forth in the smoke from the fire. It sounds easy but the fire needs to keep burning throughout the build process.
 
Maybe you can make a transformer? Someone else on here was talking about doing something like that. Make a body cover with more 3D Jeep features like the cabin and stuff that can lift off the car when he is ready to weigh in and race. Using balsa you could shape a cabin and hood that can be taken off if you choose to. Jeeps are kind of like that anyways with removable doors, fenders, tops, etc.
