OK, I'm sure like many of the seasoned board veterans, I am a DIY'er at heart. I want to learn by trial and error how to make axles and wheels insanely slick and fast. I've decided to work on axles first. Removing crimp marks from stock BSA axles and working my way through 1000 to 12000 grit paper finishing with cotton cloth and a fine rubbing compound and then a chamois with a very fine silver polish. I'm getting very close to a mirror finish, but my question is regarding the fine(er) papers, do you all have a preferred RPM/polishing pressure preference? I understand that this is a "feel" thing, and have tried a few different methods. Care to share your preferred "feel" techniques without giving away too many secrets?
