Golfing is fun.. I'm up for playing

I think its fine as is. Its John's call to determine what he can do to help and still allow for all of us to have a great venue to race and compete in....It wont matter if we get 200 something cars if John cant pay the bills that keep the place open....in that aspect it truly comes down to statistics and billing numbers....one can fool around as much as you want with specials and trying to help out and be a nice person...but there is a line where its cost versus revenue....once your in the red and spiraling down, its hard to get out and before you know it cuts start coming to services etc just to keep going....that's the last thing John or the rest of us wants....

John knows what it takes to keep this going....he has provided things like pit passes and incentives with discounts at his store etc....my impression, he does more than the average small business...and I too have gotten the replacement wheel at race time with expectation of charge or a bill...

Ideas are great if there is a way to get more people in and still allow for John to keep things going and even getting better...as long as we all understand that while this is a hobby for a lot of us, and one that indeed can get expensive at times, this is John's business and part of his livelihood...

Just for me, the limit to the number of cars I send in isn't related to money (at least not totally)...its more how much time I have to actually be able to build and prep that many cars without screwing things up....I don't want to send in anything just for the sake of sending something in....unfortunately im not as efficient as JBD or Pony with being able to make so many cars LOL!!! I don't know how you guys do it haha!

I don't think the revenue would change much, if any. There are a bunch of us who limit our entries to what we think we can afford at a certain event/time. There are a whole bunch more that submit 1 or 2 cars because that is all they have, or are interested in, or have time for or have funds for. E.g., of all those who enter, how many really submit more than 5 cars? Probably only John knows, but I think probably a small percentage of the entrants. I also think that 5 cars (or $50) would cause many who submit only 2 or 3, to up the number to 5 or more, thus more revenue, i.e. maybe another 20 or 30 dollars per builder. Also, if I paid an advance fee of say 300, that would halt me from withdrawing from an event because of other interests. E.g., look at the number of "drop outs" that occurred between January and February. If several had paid for the full series in advance, I am sure the "drop out" rate would not have been as much.

As you say, John needs to make the decision, as well as what the money amount should be (i.e, maybe not $50, but say 60 or more). Also, he could start slowly, attempt a single series, then make what ever economical changes seem justified for future series.

But I would much prefer to make a single check for the whole year, or perhaps for an individual series. And I am sure the number of individual car entries for me would increase, and I would probably be over the 5 car limit.

John, maybe this post should not have been on the forum, rather sent to you as a PM. Nevertheless, give it some serious consideration. I can go over the economic considerations with you in private.

on a related but different note....you want to talk about an expensive hobby....try golf LOL....I swear I cringe everytime I think about how much I have spent on that hobby......

Any other golfers (or hackers like myself) out there LOL?

Yes I must admit I'm am a HACKER!!!!/images/boards/smilies/wink.gif/images/boards/smilies/wink.gif/images/boards/smilies/wink.gif golf is the only sport I know that could make a preacher curse./images/boards/smilies/wink.gif/images/boards/smilies/wink.gif but that one drive or that par saving put brings me back every time.

John, you're one of the best guys I know and I appreciate you! This is not to take away from this thread or make anyone feel bad. We all have concerns over things and we all have opinions. I do know one thing, this is my hobby and I love it! I want it to be around for years to come! I may not talk to all of you but you are a big part of my life. (What a GEEK! Ha!)

P.S. OPA we need to limit you to 3 cars per class. I don't want have to race 50 of your Street Rods during a race or watch 25 different runs of you racing yourself. LOL!
blah

I considered giving up my pilot's license and take up golf, just to save money.

I know I'll probably get beat up for this.. I say if you send in 2 or less cars it should be $20!! And that would be totally fair for the amount of work that John and every other person that helps to make these races work. I mud race 4 wheelers as one of my many hobbies. By far this is my least expensive hobby. I have no less than$40,000 invested in my bikes. I guess what I'm trying to say is whatever it takes I'm willing to put forth the effort to do my part.... Thanks john, Joel, kinser, and all the other hard working folks behind the scene!!!!!!

I enjoy this hobby and hope that John is able to keep providing us a great place to race for a long time to come.. A $10 per car entry fee is not bad when you consider the price of some other forms of entertainment.

NO Pasture Pool for me! I tried it once with my step dad...went to the driving range and I hit that Durn ball as hard as I could, it bounced back and forth in between the stalls making gun shot sounds...everyone was ducking and hiding and taking cover. Luckily, it didnt hit anyone and the ball went in front of me on the grass about 3 feet, as I looked around everyone was looking at me with dirty looks! It was at that point I went to the 19th hole for a drink. True story!

$10 per car is cheap. I don't see a need for that to change of to provide incentives or discounts. I think what the focus should be however, is not counting on guys to send 5 to 10 cars every month, but to get new people involved in the hobby and send at least one car. We have a golden opportunity with the Nationals being held with Mid America . There are a bunch of scout dads who race one car per year. This is the target audience. We need to have a good turn out and show them just how fun this can be and how quickly you improve your builds by racing with the big boys. How many total builders did we have this month? 30....35? How many scouts are in just one pack? When my son was in scouts it was at least 50. This is the future of the hobby.

I know I haven't sent any cars for this series. My wife has had medical issues that have kept me out plus work. My take on this whole issue is it doesn't matter how many cars you send. If you choose to send 1 or 20 cars that is great. Some of us like many have already said it's a hobby.

At 10 dollars a car that is a fair price to pay. I send anywhere from 4 to 6 cars. I don't run all the classes and don't plan on running all of them. So my 4 to 6 cars are good enough for me. I would rather pay for each cars. Opa mentioned paying for a whole series. Well for some that might be a good idea for those that can afford to shell out 300 dollars. So what happens if you pay for the whole series and something happens that you can't send do I get a credit or refund. I love this hobby and will continue to send cars.

John, does an excellent job making sure we have a great place to race. I for one have been live for a race and saw first hand what it takes to run one of these things. I couldn't imagine trying to do this on his own. Also one of my cars did the old flip at the stop section and broke an axle. What did John do he fixed it made sure my car could finish the race. Did he charge me anything. No he did not could he charge Yes he could. That shows how much he cares about us hobbyist.

I have other hobbies also that cost way more than Pinewood Derby racing. Sky diving cost a ton. Buying your chute and gear is very expensive. Then there is my sons 4 wheeler racing that he just started. Plus my 4 wheeler addiction.

Anyway John, it's your decision and yours alone.

A note to Kinser it's been a pleasure knowing you and chatting with you and if you think the is geeky then we all are geeks.

Peace I am out. See Y'all at Nationals.

After reading the "Dave Pelz Putting Bible" I never 3 putted again. Powerful stuff from a fellow that is a rocket scientist turned golf instructor. I don't get to play as much as I used to but I did love chasing that little white ball around...

I think the entry fees and how it's setup works fine for me. Thanks John for all of the incredible behind the scenes that you and others do for us at each race. It's truly a labor of love.

W.K, Yes I love golfing, but here in Oregon it's a heck of a lot cheaper than the Islands. Kinser, I too am a geek but one of my other hobbies used to be cage fighting, so anyone who wants to call me a geek can race me or fight me, LOL. This is the least expensive and one I have a little car to show for it when I'm done. Many other hobbies leave you empty handed til next time. I just took my youngest son, and my dad golfing this afternoon after work. Good day! I have been waiting for my cars to return with many ideas for next month.

I too am a golf addict...I have to wait for business trips to lower 48 during the winter months though! lol It's like starting all over every spring, but lots of industry tournaments all summer long and and you can golf till midnight. /images/boards/smilies/wink.gif

I appreciate the kind words. Zeeb is right, growth comes from constantly adding new racers because if you are not adding then you won't have a league long. Nationals will be huge this year and will offer a venue that nobody can make excuses or complain about not having a fair race. Hopefully we will continue to bring more people in. There are pros and cons to all the ideas being kicked around and I think they all end up in the same place. I will do everything I can to keep us out of the basement.

This post for took totally he wrong way and blew was out....

I'm gonna need a translator on this one.

Might have had one to many sundowners before he wrote that post. I love this hobby and all John does for us. Thankfully I gave up golf many years ago, but my other hobby (hunting in Africa) is truly a expensive hobby and pulls me away from this hobby too much.
