Hello to everyone!!!

This seems like a really good group of people that go out of their way to help rookies like us!!!!

I sure wish I had found this site a few years ago instead of two days before his pack race. My son and I are engaged in building a car ...actually several. Mom has joined us in the garage and she is building a "pink" breast cancer car and plans to race it in the open. He won his den and was second in the pack and then lost to the second place car from the den in the finals. We finished 6th in the District last year out of about 450 cars. We were pleased, but wanted to do better. No sense dwelling on the past, so we are moving on to this year's Districts.

Since finding the site a few weeks ago, I have read almost every thread posted here since 2012 and feel almost like I know several of you personally. DD4H, Ballistic, Cram Jet, Gravity X, Lightin Boy, Hurri Crane, and others (sorry if I forgot a few) ...I want to say THANK YOU for all of the information you have all shared with everyone that has asked. Bulldog ...I want to say your videos have been both helpful and inspiring. I literally had tears in my eyes while watching you and your son at the Mid America's. It is GREAT to see how you have made this a family "thing"!

This is my son's last race season as he is an AOL and will be crossing over soon. Like Bulldog (maybe to a much lessor degree) have made this into a family event. Both my wife and son want to continue to build cars each year for the open at Districts and I certainly would not want to stand in their way! :)

I find myself waking up at night with new ideas to try and solutions for problems/issues that we have encountered. Based on the information shared here, we have built several tools to help us in the quest for better speeds and more consistency.

So going forward, we are no longer using bent axles :( and have shortened up our extended wheelbase. We are checking our drills on a speed square table and checking for drift over 8'. We are also using 12 cubes aft instead of 10.

These new cars will be our first attempt with the canted rears and the additional "engine". I am hopeful that the tuning will be a little less difficult with the canted rears.

Anyway, I do have some questions, but I will ask them in a separate thread as I mainly wanted to introduce us and say THANK_ YOU to everyone here!!!! :D:D:D

Great way to introduce yourself TBR! Welcome aboard to the most addicting hobby on three wheels! Thanks for the mention. As you have already gathered everyone here is ready to help you gain some speed. When you get time, build one and send it into one of the monthly league races. Above all have fun and enjoy the hobby.

The key to tuning starts with a good foundation, in this case, the drilled body. Alignment is critical here at this level of racing. Checkout Lightnin' Boy's alignment video. Good luck!

Yea, I figured out one of the keys is a solid foundation ... after his pack car was done. We did get a Silver Bullet Pro, and I also bought the 1-2-3 blocks based off of LB's alignment video. I have found the 1-2-3 block to be quite useful in the few weeks I have had them!

Who knows, we may consider getting our butts whooped later, but for now the focus is on his and Mom's success at the Districts. I did have a tune session for all of the Scouts in his pack. Those that attended all either won their den or finished directly behind someone else that attended our "tune session". It was REALLY rewarding to see how happy those kids were when they finished well! It was just as rewarding to have my son at the drill press giving instructions/teaching the other kids how to polish their axles!

THANX - There is a name that I missed .. I hope I did not offend you, but I was trying to do it from memory. Lord knows my memory is great, BUT my recall ....that is a different question.

Hello guys, I to am new to pinewood derby racing. I did not know about this site until I came across a youtube video posted by DD4H about 2016 National Championships I wish we found it last year. My son and i have built two cars for scouts. Last year he won first in his tiger den in the pack race. We went to the council race where he won first again in his den, placed 9th overall for an invitation to the championship in NY, but we couldn't go. We just had the pack race this time he won first in his den and grand champion fastest of the pack. We go in march to the council race to try our luck again. I talked to a pro this time for some tips and it really paided off. Jewkes Engineering it don't know if he posts info on this site or not but he really helped us out. We have three more years of racing so I'm looking forward for getting more tips from the pros. I really like pinewood derby I may build a car and try racing myself. Thanks.

Great post brother, glad you liked the info, pass it along!

Thanks for everything you have shared!! :):)

If you get a chance, I had a question for you in the Track section about your starting gate.

I agree ...pass it along ...pay it forward! We already have plans for a tune session for all of the cub scouts that will still be racing next year. My son is looking forward to teaching/sharing tips that he has learned! I know we will still be learning!

In all seriousness, the link I provided is a great place to start. Rules, schedules, where to ship your cars to, etc. is all there.
