Nope... Is that something you've tried or something you're going to try?
Just thinking. Our derby is in February, but I think and research long before hand. My thought is to polish the axle, and then spin the axle and hole a ball of tephlon tape against it. Then spin it the other direction. Hope to build a tephlon layer on the nail.
Not sure about that. I have had good local results taking axles in a Drexel tool on a stand, bevel the heads contact surface about 5 degrees and cleaning burrs from shafts with a file, then using progressive grits of Emory paper wet to 12k to the back of the head and area shaft that will contact the wheel, and polishing then with DD4H polish and leather strap. Clean good. Then drop them one at a time into a jar with sailkote, slosh them around and tweezer them out and place into a wood block with shallow holes to dry upright. Then polish with a no-lint polishing cloth. Ready to go for graphite at my Pack race. The two boys I help finished 1 and 2. (Wheel prep is another story)
Question, After the axle is polished to a mirror finish it's a slick finish, Is it faster to add another slick substance on top of that & if so what would be a good choice ?
I mean a perfect axle, a perfect wheel bore & high quality graphite in between is another layer better ?
Of coarse I'm sure my prep isn't perfect but it is good.
I've seen Jig-a-loo, Dry chain lube, nano wax, pledge & others all mentioned before. Any preferences out there ?

For the most part what you use for lube determines what you’ll put on the axle. if you are going oil Jig is the best but I hear folks also use chain saver. For graphite it’s Pledge.
For graphite it's pledge all the way. After polishing and cleaning the axle, spray it with lemon pledge and leave it for a few minutes. Wipe it off completely with a clean dry towel, and you're done and ready for the wheel and graphite... I was skeptical when I heard about it, but after trying it, there's absolutely no doubt.
Teflon tape works well. Once the axle is prepared and perfect, hold a ball of teflon tape on the axle, near the head, as the axle spins. 60 seconds forward and 60 seconds in reverse. A mirror shine and the wheel spins great. The ball of Teflon tape is about the size of a dime.

Have you tried pledge with graphite?
Have you tried jig a loo with oil?
Those are two proven methods that are a great starting point.
Yeah the pledge/sailkote comparison continues. I am fortunate that our Awana rules allow oil so for me I don’t even have to squeeze my brain thinking about that one.
I tried it last year as a substitute for Jig. Seemed to make car slower. Reprepped axles without it and ran krytox and speed went up.
