Hello. Long time lurker, new member here.

This site is amazing! Lots of great info here. I learned enough to help my grandson build a winning scout car. I’ve really got the bug to build another...
Congratulations! I'm a long time lurker turned poster myself. We do Awana now. I hope to run with the pros someday. We did scouts a long time ago. Seems like every race we go to, they always forget to put a nice stop section. Our first big race damaged our car since there was nothing after the stops and the car dropped of the table. Please don't be afraid to speak up if you think the kids car is at risk before the race. It's my favorite pet peeve! Good luck on your next build!

1.5 x 2.5" of sticky back sand paper, about 220 grit stops ours.
Not needed in league racing, it tears up their quality stuff.

You have to finish the race to win the race.

If Ya'll think you have the bug now, Waite til you find yourself at the cosmetic counter looking at nail polish.

Best of luck

Lol. I’m interested in competing in league racing. But guys that have their own tracks for testing and tuning... that’s kinda intimidating

Lol! That's how it always begins. I so remember that feeling. That moment after that first successful race with your kid when you realize that there isn't another race for a whole year.

That bug bites hard, and the pinewood derby rabbit hole goes deep... You'll find that it's filled with a lot of good people though, and it's a lot of fun... Welcome to the addiction.

Just dive in the waters fine.
You don't need a track to make big progress on your skills & "in my opinion" it really doesn't pay off till you have a few builds under your belt.
We got into the middle of the pack without one.
Send in a car & see where you are as a starting point then move forward.
Start with the basics, Rear drill, wheel & axle prep, & 4" of steer over 4', there is way more to it but we all started somewhere & all the information is here in the forums.

The easy speed comes quickly, then you start loosing your mind over a .01 or .005 sec. Yep it's going to happen.

Lets say a test track is $1000 or more..You can run a lot of proxy races @ $10 a pop + shipping, if you build more cars you get more data & speed sooner.
Keep in mind these guys " not me" are the fastest in the country, so that took the sting out of 15th place for me.
You have to race the clock for now not the pros.

Track guy here. Just run and work on your prep. You can find some speed insuring your builds are square and by limiting the amount of swing your cars have. But focus on getting in the 9s before stressing the finer tuning. The RACing will make you focus as you go. Go Luck and hope to see you on the hill soon.
