How close should the wheels be to the body?

We have our district race coming up and I do not have time to get more axles and work on them. We won our pack race so I am happy with the car for the most part, BUT I feel the wheels were a little wobbly due to me sanding too much off the axles (stock bsa). We used a credit card for spacing of the wheels. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to move the wheels closer to the car to eliminate some wobbling. I know that would mean the wheels would probably rub on the body more but I feel we did a good Job burnishing the wheels. It rides on 3 wheels and does but ride on the rail if that makes a difference. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I am fairly new here, so to it for what it is worth ....most likely you can gain some speed by tightening up the wheel gaps. For a scout car around here, I think you will hear that .015" - .020" will be what is being recommended. Especially considering that you feel confident that you burnished the wheels well. Any wobble that you can get out of the wheels will help. Obviously if you have access to a test track try it at a couple different gaps and go with what works the best.

BTW, a credit card normally is anywhere from .045" - .055".
