How come some Scout packs participate in district races and others do not?

I see from time to time where people talk about district and council races, but this doesn't seem to be a consistent thing. I recall asking our pack a long time ago, and no one knew anything about it. I tried googling for info and really didn't get any hits.

It isn't mandatory for any pack, troop, district or council to have a pwd race, so it just depends on the leaders/volunteers on whether there is a race. Cub Scout Packs usually have a race because it is the "Cub Scout thing to do" and it usually satisifies some requirements for some ranks. On a district and council level it just depends on history (have they always had one) and how involved (or excited) the leadership is about pwd. Some areas are just a lot more involved with pwd than others...

One of the leaders said that some dads almost got into a fist fight and they haven't had one since. This isn't true because we've been there for the last three pwd races and that has never happened. Our first was in '08 and we've gone 3 for 3. Maybe that's the reason. IDK

We have been called cheaters every time we've won. lol

^^^ Haha, well your probably winning by like 6 car lengths. Thats a real shame though. Im the assistant Cubmaster for my pack. Luckily, no one in my pack its too crazy competative like that.

Overthrow the Cubmaster and get that thing going again!

No Joke!!

What is the point of cub scouts without the PWD?

Seriously. It is the thing I remember most from the experience.

You just need a huge guy at the check-in.

He will have SECURITY on his T-shirt.

I found out 2 years ago our district choose to support and fund a District wide hike where too, I don't know, but it got voted on to do that instead of having a council or district PWD championship. It had to do with funding I was told. So like 5kids says its really up to the local districts. Almost all the packs have a race, but that's it. There has been a few churches in the area who had open races for fun and to raise money

I'm disappointed PWD ends after Cubs, why not continue into and thru Boy Scouts? I'm sure my boy will still want to build once he hits Boy Scouts. What kind of a message does this send to the boys, it sure isn't going to encourage any scouts to join a racing league.

Good Point! Most 7-11 year olds have no chance of being able to build a decent car all by themselves anyway. The pwd isnt part of the Boy Scouts program, but that doesnt mean you couldn't have a pwd race. Heck, if you want to have an anual nose picking contest you can...... just have to convince your troop to do it.

One thing I don't get is why it's only done once a year. The pack has a nice track and Besttrack timer that gets put away in someone's garage for the rest of the year. Would be nice to break it out more often.

Actually I asked this question once before. Basically it comes down not enough time and very little profit. Each Den has to achieve so many belt loops or achievements if they are to earn their (tiger, wolf, bear, weblos) badges through the school year. The summer is spent going to camps and most families won't commit to more cub scouts events than necessary due to vacation and other interest during the summer months. The other part is each pack has at least 3 or more fund raising events each year and getting them organized and planning out the weekend takes up more of the pack time. If a pack doesn't do a few fund raiser a year they can't afford to recharter the following year, because dues just don't cut it in most packs to cover the expenses of going on camping trips or other activities.

I actually asked about doing an Auction/PWD race for adults to race. But its against BSA rules I was told, never got a complete answer as why thou.
So as always Time and Money are the reasons

Sondo- You will need to make it a fund raiser race that donates any amount for entry fees and ensure them there will be no betting on the cars... Sad but I have heard this as well they think it is a time to bet on the races... Heck hand them tickets for every dollar donated for a chance to win a prize or car ect....

Include all ages and race the adults just like an Outlaw class..... Open it up to who ever wants to race and go from there.... They can't say no to a fund raiser especially if you have the Scouts working the scene to earn the money.. Just present it differently..... We have all kinds of ideas and some have to be Parents only as Cubbie's are to young to park cars (Direct) them to the parking spot by themselves... ect....

Don't give up on it .. Just find the other way to present it to get it in... once it is in then you get your rules ect set for all ... And Have Fun with it so they want to come back.... Heck have the kids run a concession stand to satisfy the fund raiser event that would be better you hold the race for adults and the Cubbie's will run that to earn money... Just thinking out loud and outside the box..

The twins (austin n alex) had their pack race this past weekend. Austin was first and alex third. Our district has a race that is hosted by a pack in the district (maybe something to look into). Our top finishers get their registration for the district race paid by monies earned through snack sales at the pack race. They have an open class race as well for those who didn't finish at the top in their pack races. We also have a race in the spring downtown at the local museum that is open to scouts as well. It is scheduled close to the indy 500 and is on a 2 storey, 125 foot long track.

I think Sondo nailed it. Time. For some it's hard enough to get it pulled off once a year. Also, remember on average only half of the parents want to do it. Could you imagine trying to motivate them to do it twice?

For those of us that need to vent our racing urges, we have the NPWDRL.
