How do you hold wheels for sanding?

Hi all, used the Black Ice system for the first time last night. Went well overall, and will do some things differently next time. Could definitely see a difference at 30x magnification vs. stock, so I'm excited to see the performance differences.

My question is, how do you hold your wheels for initial sanding? My first step was to wet sand the wheel tread (mostly the edges) with 1,200 grit. I don't like using the wheel mandrels because the threaded rod though the bore scares me a bit! So instead, what I did was to hold the wheel on a relatively fresh Tamiya swab, which gave it just enough friction to hold it for a light sanding. Couldn't exert that much force on it though, or the wheel would stop and swab would spin in the bore.

Myself I use the pro wheel mandrel and carefully insert the threaded end. I then wet sand the inner edge and cone for about 10 seconds with each grit 1500...2000...2500....3000....5000

After this then I use DD4H black ice system to do the bores. If you slightly rubbed the wheel bore with the set screw from the mandrel then doing bore polishing with black ice system last should take care of it.

I know some will cringe at this but works good for me. I chuck mine in the drill press with just enough pressure to not dig in outer hub or fall out of chuck. Then I use 1000grit-3000grit on tread wet.

the amount of care and work that goes into my bores for league racing... my wheel mandrel is now a paper weight never to touch a wheel EVER again.
Ditto Brian's recommendation of QTip stalk. They are about the perfect size to insert into the bore and then it will hold nicely. You can then spin that drill at slow speed and sand and polish the tread nicely. Do this before you do your bore prep. Oh, and paper stalks NOT the plastic ones.
