We got our kit last night and the race is next wednesday. I need some help pretty fast. Thank you in advance for everything. We have to use the kit and everything that's supplied in it. The boat can't be any longer than 7" and we have to attach the mast and it can be no higher than 6-7". thanks for the help!!!/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Never actually done the Regatta, but it is my understanding that the biggest speed thing is to tell the boy to blow at the *bottom* of the sail, and not the top.

Chris - Lets chat we need to catch up. I have done several of these have a few ideas for you. Text me when you can chat.

Im certainly no boating design expert however, my son and I are working on em now also! What we did was sand down the front bottom part of the hull to make it less resistant to water flow but left the middle and back as flat as possible. We saw a bunch of boats the last year with people shapping the bottom and rounding it to make it more like a real boat bottom and all it did was make the boat less stable and tilt side to side as its was unbalanced. And with the sail and captains cabin etc on top, flat on the bottom is the most stable to me. However, there is nothing wrong with sanding down the top middle of the boat (not the sides or edges) to reduce weight and improve boyancy which is what we did this year. Looking at our boat last year, with all the stuff on the boat, it was back heavy which is fine so the front doesnt dip down into the water, but alot of boats last year the back end was halfway down in the water and some even sank back first. As such this year we are going to lighten the boat overall....i drilled holes under the back cabin part before gluing it on and with the the reduction of mass from sanding the top middle and cutting of the weight in the back, the boat floats much higher on the water (less of the boat under the waterline), it still favors weight at the back so the front doesnt go under, and so far it glides really nice and minimal water is washing over ontop the deck (which would be bad now that we have essentially sanded out a depression on the top!). We also shaved down the keel and rudder to make it very aerodynamic (or water dyanamic) to reduce drag in the water.

We cant make dual hulls or catamerans etc so that is out.

Summarize, for us this year, reduce overall weight to improve buyoancy, sand smooth to reduce drag, water seal so no leaks or absorbing of water by the wood.

But the most important thing was already stated....practice blowing hard, long and steady at the mid bottom of the sail with my son LOL....in the end, otherthan some slight increases in speed from build, it is my firm belief that the kid who can blow the hardest consistently on target wins....

But id also love to hear any more tips from anyone else who has done a number of these!

Dman after all that I went and looked up the kit and its not the same single hull only kit like ours.....not sure anymore if anything I said above is useful! LOL

Sorry!

Just looking at that kit (and by the way, im going to recommend to our pack leader to consider using this one next year LOL), it would appear that the whole stability issue with the single hull boat tipping side to side is gone for the most part.

As such, the only thing I can think of is making the fronts of the hull and each of the side pieces like knifes in the front to cut down drag in the water, reduce weight overall so water doesnt wash over any part of it. Weight the back a bit more so when blowing the sail the front of the hull and side pieces dont tip into the water. Ive read in some posts elsewhere that for those catamaran styles, the sail becomes even more important as evertime the side of the sail hits the side of the gutter itll slow down. Ive read some people dont use the mast and just bend/round their sail side to side and glue it on (looks like a upside down U when looking top down rather than a C from the side) and now if the sail touches a side of the gutter, it touches on a curved surface and almost serves as like a spring to push the boat back in line. If you have to use the mast and cross branches, like we do then we make sure the sides of the sails are at least bent/curved in for the same reason as above. The way our raingutters are set up is that technically if the mast is installed correctly the bottom of the sail should clear the top of the gutters and not touch but you can imagine that isnt always the case with the water sloshing around...so we round the edges just in case....seems to help not getting as stock on the rail... and any outside edge of the boar in general we smooth so no real sharp angles to hit the side of the rail.

Not sure if this helps but its what I would think would be helpful and what ive read about the catamaran style on other sites.

After painting our boat I sprayed Jig A Loo on the bottom where the water line is and our boat smoked on water. I also had my son practice blowing threw a straw from door knob to door knob in our hall way about 15 to 30 minutes a day...we won by the way

Chief!! (Norm!) Was beginning to wonder if you fell off the side earth. Jig to the Rescue!

Thanks for all of the help guys! My Son took 1st place! I really think that the kid who has the best blowing technique with the straw is the kid that will win with these boats. Thanks for that tip Chief, I had my Son blowing through a straw all day today. The kid who took second didn't have any special boat but he also had a good blowing technique. Thanks to all of you for your help, I really appreciate it.

I really wish I could race with you all this weekend but I can't. I'll be back though, hopefully soon. I check in here all of the time to see how things are going, I just don't have much to say lately. I wish you all good luck.

Take care!

Kinser tell your son congrats! Take your time coming back remember family and your health always comes first your place will be here when you return.

congrats to you and your son Kinser! Ours is this weekend and like you im taking the Chief advice and he is practicing blowing on a straw!

Kinser ....
peace

Nice to see you online and CONGRATS on the win... I saw the boats the new design is pretty awesome...
