to Pinewood derby cars. I did not see a section for an introduction so I will put it here. My name is Jim and I have an 8 year old who is in his 2nd year of Cub Scouts. I have lurked here over the last 2 months or so reading tips for Pinewood Derby cars. I have made a couple of cars for the adult Pinewood Derby my sons pack runs and have a few ideas for other cars that I will be making this year. My son will also be reading for any good tips I find and does the majority of work on his cars with me giving tips and explaining how to do things.

I figure it is only right to share any ideas that I have online since I have gotten a lot of ideas from others. The cars I built this year were meant to be different not fast. Next year I will be building for speed.

He did most of the work himself. I held his hand doing the cuts on the band saw and dremeled out the bottom so that we could fit the speaker in it. (we decided to do the speaker after the car was 95% done and did not want him to punch through the top of the car with the dremel) everything else was him. His car came in 4th out of 31. The speaker is a bluetooth speaker hooked up to my phone and played music while racing.

The first car I built for myself was this Jeep. I found the template on line and thought it was a very neat idea. the instructions were well done and easy to follow.

Right after I finished the jeep I was looking at my bluetooth speaker and thought "it would be cool to put a speaker in a car, I wonder if it could be done". I could not go to sleep until I figured out a good way to do so and put my idea down on paper. I made my speaker car the next day.

The car was not the fastest (10 out of 21) for the adult Pinewood Derby, but I was not going for speed with it. It was fun to build. A video below.

My wife also got into the spirit and made a TARDIS car.
