Krytox 100 discontinued?

Sounds like they need to have a "Turtle Race" where the goal is to go as slow as possible and still finish!
That's an awesome idea!

Last year, pack started the Lion Program, which are young kids setting up to transition to full blown Cub Scouts, Kindergartners. They participated in the Pinewood Derby, but were not apart of the actual competition and there were no winners or losers. They couldn't add weight. Was just an intro to Pinewood Derby for the next year. They all reached the finish line though.

Nah. Turtle races take too much skill.
Seriously, when I see rule sets that say "must use axle slots", "no canting", "cars must not be designed to ride the rail", "four wheels must touch the track", etc, that's what goes through my mind.

I feel you on that! I didn't think anything about it last year when I didn't know as much about it, but this year I realize our troops strict rules are a pain in the butt! They are meant to even the field, but rob the kids of learning the tricks and trades of achieving true speed. That's part of the fun! Besides, it doesn't matter how strict the rules are, I think the kids that would have won with less rules will win with more rules. They will find a way to win! It's just robbing them of the chance to dig deeper, put more effort into there cars and achieve more. If a kid is driven to win, he will find a way to win no matter the rules.

Also sets up our pack to not be competitive at the district level, which has different rules. If you want to be competitive, you have to build another car.

Oh I meant our church itself. They were trying to eliminate all speed tricks to curb dominance. I was worried our churches individual rules were going to ban it.
Did you still dominate?
I'm a believer in that once you know the basics of pwd, you will still do well in spite of a ruleset made just for you because you already know the fundamentals.

Will know this Friday/Saturday. At our tech day, I do know that both of my kids cars were faster than the winning cars last year. Hopefully it translates to race day!

We did ok last year, but that was before I found this forum. I won the adult derby and my son won his den race. He would have been competitive at the pack level if they hadn’t dropped his car and slowed it down.

I’ll let you know after March 23rd. Lol
We were mid pack 3 years ago when I just found the science basics vid on YouTube. That was our churches first Awana GP. Then I found this site and the following year was a slaughter. One mom was an engineer who did a pretty good job on her 3 year olds car (Cubbies) and has it dripping WD40. They killed all that first year. So she was only a couple cars behind my kids. All others you can tell no one did research. It was sad.
Then last year I realized the don’t even have rules, just the sheet that says use all parts in kit. So I got Johns Sizzle, Black Ice and Red Rocket. Oh my gosh... people started to get frustrated. I built one for open class. We took all the trophies.
Then this year they created the “screw Jimmy” rules. Lol killing all speed tricks. But they now want to go to Awana State championships and I let them know the kids will get killed on these restrictions so they relaxed the rules after looking at a couple different neighboring Awana region rule sets I sent them and talking to the states director. Open class is still no rules so yes I will go for the throat... I know more now from hanging with pros over at APR and getting lots of help and plan on making them regret poking the bear.
My son is still in Awana but even with no bending axles or cutting wheels I feel we can still dominate. We’ll see. I am actually doing a few help nights and a tips video because truth they all need help and I want to get us all fast but yes I hope to take all trophies again.
 ;) :D

Thanks, I like this suggestion a lot. Was not super comfortable with specifying a certain product name, so this eliminates that concern. I'm going to re-write our draft 2020 rules now to record it!
For your re-write this is our rules use them if you wish...this was for our LEGO derby by the way as it is 6oz. Best of luck to you

  • The overall LENGTH of the car must not exceed 7” inches.
  • The overall HEIGHT of the car must not exceed 3” inches.

We did get the rewrite done. Just updated things to reflect current building and trends. It's a lot longer than Chief's. I wish they were that simple. Here's the overview, Key items, Revised verbiage on wheel finishing, to reflect that there are a variety of methods and tools to prepare a wheel. Also differentiate between Open class and other groups. Axles, simplified terminology and clarified use of slot cut in axle head for tuning purposes. Lubrication, use of graphite allowed but other forms are recommended. Verbiage added regarding disqualification for over application.**Less is fast** Turtle division is not addressed, research must be done and an addendum will be posted once the team has reviewed available guidelines. Plan on an "open" Turtle Division for the 2020 racing season. Anyone with Turtle rules please forward.

If I was starting or changing race rules...I'd start by adopting a national level ruleset and extending it from the bottom up for the region. Won your den? Great...you can race in the Pack race? Won your Pack? Great...You can race in the district race? Won your district? Great...you can race in the council race? Won council? Great..go to Mid-Am and get creamed by Ballistic and Quicktime (No, No I'm not still bitter).
In any case, the rules wouldn't limit how far you can go with your car and still not be hampered at the next level. You can work a build from December to April and keep improving or build a new car for every race if you want. If you make it to a National Level race and win...I'd say you had quite a year.

We have church, regional and state races. The rules should be standardized across all three as the state will likely adopt the new regional rules. The problem we have is AWANA puts some (extremely vague and poorly written) building guidelines in their kits and lots of clubs don't bother to connect and get the regional rules. Then they complain when their cars don't meet them. The revised ones should make it really easy for people to compete at regional and state now.

I’d like to get a copy of them if you can point me where to go for download or maybe send me a copy in email.
We were one of those churches just relying on the paper in the kits and I want to help them tighten this all up for 2020.

Can do. Remember, these are SW Mich and likely state. West Michigan Awana Grand Prx FB page has them. Just ask to be added. I know the admin. He's pretty decent.;)
Are his initials J. D. ?
I am already a part of that group and have their rules. I actually sent those to the local folks here to help them see the folly of their original no fast rules set they came up with this year.
It’s been interesting watching him work with the folks insisting on bringing back graphite and then his adding a turtle class.

If you read the new set for 2020 the administrative team capitulated but added notes that if the car sheds lubricant (any kind) it gets DQ'd. I was at the regional and there was some discussion on the turtle idea. I don't think I'll be building one of those but it should be fun. Have to figure out how to get GPRM to run a slow race.

I didn’t read the rules yet but I did see the post on the page mentioning that a car can be dq’d if it’s rediculous.
I watched a few older graphite application vids on you tube out of morbid curiosity and just cringed... people practically bathing their wheels in excessive graphite thinking they were doing right and smart and just not knowing any better. Thought it was going to give me nightmares. Lol

That’s more than a 3 hour drive for us. Probably won’t make it. There is another race here local for Awana that they are referring to as a “state” championship Awana race. Probably more like on a regionals level. I haven’t seen the info on it yet but all local Awana clubs are able to send their 3 fastest boys & girls from TNT.

Do you live in Ontario? It's less than 3 hours from Kent City to Ford Field. We West Michigan folks drove to your side last year in an ice storm. Come on over. Don't be shy. There is a regional race in the Ypsi area. I haven't seen the info on it yet either. It's usually mid April.
