last minute entry for the big race in SS

I was going to wait until the Fall to try my first "pro" level race, but given the new "SCOUT" division for first time racers in the championship race, I made a last minute decision to build a couple of cars for that race instead.

I've never built fender cars before, so I tried one with the "nellie faye" style fenders (have no idea why they are called that) and one with separate fenders.

Spent the whole weekend building these 2 cars and all that is left now is to let the paint dry and get them weighted and tuned. I have no idea how fast they'll be, but they are some of the better looking cars I've ever built and playing with fenders was a blast.

I'll have to admit, the chance to win some great prizes, even as a proxy racer, at the championship race was some incentive as well. John really has some nice stuff lined up and that grand prize (2 lane best track and timer) is spectacular. One can only dream.......

Excellent looking car bird. Glad you will have a car in the race. Your right, John does have some awesome prizes lined up and just to have a chance to win any of them is worth having a car entered. Good luck to you!

Did u cut a gap in the fenders on the Nellie Faye car so that john can check the wheels, other wise tuning won't do any good cause they will pull the wheels. Just a FYI. Nice cars though

After looking at your post I had to go back and look again at the rules cause I thought when it said Scout it literally meant Cub Scouts. I didn't realize it was for those new to league racing.

Could you eleborate on this? What gets checked that would need a gap in the fender? They don't just inspect the wheel from the bottom?

John doesn't really need to check the wheel OD so there is no need for a gap. He would only pull a wheel after the race to check weight if needed.

Great looking cars!! It doesn't look like you have indexed the lower parts of the fenders. Don't forget to do that, or you will not be happy with the results.

Don't worry about hacking your fenders for me to check the wheels. Make sure you have done what Quicktime said! The fenders will kill you if you don't.

DD & Others:

I cut a "notch" in the bottom of all my fenders to ensure fenders will not touch the rail (i.e. the wheels will touch the rail before the fenders could possibly touch). I was pretty proud of myself for thinking ahead on that one.

Initial tuning shows my cars to be about 0.1 slower than the oil car my son and I built for the Mid America race (and about the same as the graphite car I build for the mid america race). I was expecting to see some type of advantage from my fenders, but haven't found it yet. Our mid america cars used an extended wheel base and these have a standard 4 3/8" wheel base. I also forgot to cut my normal 1/16" notch for the DFW to stay closer to the rail, that may be part of my problem.

I have until Tuesday night to figure it out, cuz I have to mail in the cars on Wednesday as I'm out of pocket for the rest of the week after that.

The Nellie Faye fenders are not going to be that fast. You can see that from the people that sell them. They don't run them on their best cars. It is more for looks than performance.
