lazer mounts

here are pics of the custom mounts i made for the best track.

sorry for the huge pics, but i figured you may need to see the detail.

i bent a couple small strips of 2"x 1/8" flat steel and milled out grooves for the bolts to hold them to the track, one piece has only those grooves in it as the lazer has a magnet attached, the other one is for the "receiver" and reset button part, it has 3 grooves in it, 1 in the middle for the eye to pick up the beam, and the 2 on the outside to mount the box to. i used small self tapping screws to hold it on.
the grooves allow a huge amount of adjustability, the bar to break the beam is a short piece of angle aluminum the i cut one side off of after the first inch. the photo shows a piece about 6" long, we had to cut off about 2 1/2" at the race as it was causing a pendulum effect. you will also need to shorten the starting pegs by about 3/4" and add a strip of adhesive foam to the back (top) of the gate where it comes together when the pegs are down.
John helped alot during this process at the race. also, the spring must be relocated to one of the starting pegs for all of this to work. if you have questions PM me, it sounds complex, but its not.

pic of the receiver mount.

pic of the lazer mount, not much to see, just like the receiver mount but without the 3 grooves.

pic of the outside of the receiver mount and the aluminum bar i made to break the beam. this bar was too long, a 3 or 3 1/2" bar is plenty. you can also see that if the bar even twitches the timer starts, even a .0001 of movement will cause it to start. or you can adjust it to have a somewhat less hair trigger.

DNA, why is it required to change the spring attach? This doesn't look like it would interfere with the normal operation.
Thanks

I have a laser question for y'all. I have been saving and saving and am planning on purchasing a timer in the next few days. I am leaning toward the Champ. My question is are the laser mounts more accurate than the Champ's start gate switch? I am guessing the most important aspect is consistancy, but I was hoping y'all might have some adviice or experience. (I have ordered a starting system to help with consistant pulls as well). Thanks as always.

I have a Micro Wizard timer and I use the micro switch. I have never had any problems at all and it is very consistent. The only drawback that I know of is that it resets the timer when you close the start gate, so if you close the gate while the cars are still on the track you will not get the times. For me that has never been an issue. Lasers can be tricky to set up and you have to hit a reset button to reset the timer. If you forget to do that, you will have to rerun the race.

Skippy, I also use a micro switch for starting. I however bought a new switch that instead of just a metal tab coming off the switch it has a roller bearing on the tip. Super smooth and consistent. I think I got it at radio shack for a few bucks.

That sounds awesome Quicktime. When I get my start switch I will have to look into that. I am planning on ordering parts for the Gate mod Owens posted a while back. It is sounding like a smooth start gate is important. Do y'all use any lubricants or do the mechanics with your modifications fill the bill?
I just have to say thank you once more. Y'all are brilliant and I am greatly appreciative of your willingness to help me and others get on the right track. (pun not intended, but cool). /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif
Thanks again.

I don't use any lubricant. In this picture you can see what the switch looks like. Sometimes a little easier to find what your looking for when you can see a picture of it.

+10000 you can barely see it in the picture. That is a great gate mod.!!

I did the Owens gate mod a couple months ago. That is a fantastic improvement to the gate. It is sooo smooth now. I ordered the exact same parts from McMaster that he posted. I highly recommend it.

Joel,
For some reason I can not see the photo that you posted. Can you repost it please? Thanks. I have also done the Owen's gate mod months ago and well worth it. I still need to get an electric starter switch. Here are a few pics of my gate.

Joel, or Skippy, can you send me the pic that's gone missing in this thread. Trying to get parts together for when my track arrives in a couple weeks.

Thanks!

In case Joel doesn't see your post, I believe the switch he was referring to looks something like this:

They're available with metal bearings also in a variety of ratings.
Search "micro switch with bearing" and find one with a suitable rating.
