I am very curious to see how long the NPWDRL will remain fruitful. It seems that there must be a lifespan for pinewood derby leagues. I wonder why certain leagues become successful and why they eventually die. Reflecting back on the life of league racing:

  • WIRL- Started it all off and had a strong run for a few years. Was successful for the novel idea but seemed to die because of very poor race execution and standards. Very political and had no shortage of drama.
  • PDDR- The Jewkes broke away from WIRL and had a reverberating run of success. Very polarizing figures that ran a very high quality event. The PDDR seemed to spawn the most successful racers of today. Unequivocal success made the PDDR the top league in its time. The massive egos of the Jewkes and antics of Moodswing eventually doomed the league and sent it into oblivion at a meteoric pace.
  • PWDR- The "B" league as it is referred to. Created from cries of cheating at the PDDR and always was a cheap knockoff of the PDDR. Never gained much popularity until Slick handed the keys over to Lucky who took over at a golden time when the PDDR was in shambles. The PDDR stumble was the only thing to buoy the PWDR from the inevitable rue age. Still limping along today after being run into the ground by the Ohio leg and now just kept a float by the racers that still harbor ill will towards the other polarizing tyrant. Death or WIRL status is immanent.
  • East Coast Derby- The DerbyDad4Hire PDDR knockoff that gathered the East Coast racers. Luke warm support for the year or so in existence. Folded into the PDDR in the westward migration of the Daddio.
  • NPWDRL- Now seems to be the leader of the pack and is putting up record numbers for the moment. The eventual destruction will no doubt rear its ugly mug and take down this empire when the Daddio gets angry and goes Godfather slaughtering all opposition dooming yet another racing league.
I can't claim to know what it takes to maintain and run a successful pinewood derby racing league. I would really like to be enlightened as to why it is so hard to build and then maintain. I already see the few trying to secretly sway the hoards to the APR. The death of pinewood derby league racing will come from the almighty PM. I am impressed at just how many back biters troll all the pwd info sites.

Thats an interesting read. I would think the future of pwd racing and the success would somewhat depend on getting new builders/racers into the scene on a regular bassis. Every club/forum has its share of drama, People get burnt out. As long as there is the possiblitiy to create faster cars there will be the need and want to build and race them right? This is all new to me though, I am as green as they come to PWD. Working on my build list right now for my first league car, a street stock AM build. I hope this league stays around for a long time, seems like a good group of guys.

NOW THAT IS SOME FUNNY S&#T!!!!!
lol
lol
lol

John I think your profile needs a name change !!!

I have to laugh as I have friends on other forums and I keep on those forums for that reason ... SO I am here and will be here for as long as I can and one day race here... I find the guys here pretty cool as I have found some on other forums to be pretty cool as well ... I have not been around long but I feel there are two areas I can look for in PWD.... knowledge, friendships that guild over times...

People will hang and check out things they want to and stay where they feel welcomed .. I saw one racer post stating he raced another league as well as here so who cares... He is a racer and he might find different racing level or he may dominate over the others, maybe there is a grudge match ... As long as people are having fun, learning and doing what they like ... This is like anything else sad to say .. $$$ talks ... builds fast cars .. but not many places I have seen tell the new guys .. JUST BUILD A CAR AND RACE... We will help you get better once you hit the track... Use what you can until you can improve your tools, wheels, axles.... So on ... I have had a few guys offer help and tell me to let them know when I get to the point of building a car as they want to see me put a car on the track that will run better then me doing it alone and not moving forward...

Time will tell as John has shown many people he cares and wants this to move forward ... It is sad when you have a target on your back for everyone to take a shot at... At least he has seen what has failed and seen what was working and possibly why others have failed. There seems to be many guys mad as he is moving on in life and doing something with a BIG following ... And Growing ...

Sounds like John you need to write a book called

"Chicken Soup for a Pine Wood Derby Racer"

Next level I don't know who you think you are putting up a post with once again misinformation. It's the stupid rumors and wrong facts which cause this exact issue among racers and leagues. I have been racing with John for 4 years. PDDR, East Coast, and NPWDRL. This forum is for racers and people who support the sport. Where are your cars? This league has now been in effect for 2 seasons. There are more new builders sending in every month. It is growing. New friendships are developing. Products are selling better than any time. The God Father..... Yes he is. I am known on this board as one being outspoken. Like it or hate it, I am here to stay. So I am calling you out publicly, send in and race then get your facts correct. Beat me
on the track, I will shake your hand. Run your incorrect facts, you can post those elsewhere. You have 1 week to respond with your cars. Will you accept?

BS it is ...... Just another one to stir up the trash ....

I would really like to see who you are on other forums ... You seem not to want anyone to know and I find it amusing how good people are at talking trash when it heats up .... this can't be your only forum your on as you have so much knowledge and history of all these Leagues...
beatup

Next-
I am impressed at just how many back biters troll all the pwd info sites.

I bite nothing ... FYI I don't bash any of the other Forums either ... When I visit other forums I respect each forum as I am there for other reasons ... Not stirring up garbage.....

Oh wait should I PM you Next that way you fill SPECIAL!!!!

Great response. "I will own you". Who are you the terminator? Put up or shut up. You pick the class pinks race next Saturday. My bet is you won't have the stones! Any dumb ass can post comments and incorrect ones at that. Why do you hide who you are? Let me show you how this is done. Mike Chipping. Live in Utah. Pcell phone number available upon request. Ah.. you're a Tool. Just another hater against the best league and racers ANYWHERE. Im anxious for your response.

Maybe leagues are like Countries? Look at History.....Many civilizations have enjoyed a reign at the top, but for some reason or another cannot sustain that status. Greece, Rome, UK, USA.........(not too sure USA is at the top anymore?) I would like to think so, but my gut feeling tells me otherwise. I am not saying I wish NPWDRL an ill fate and do not want this PM to be taken that way....time will tell as it always does...........Now for the "B" league.........LOL I know there were not as many gifted competitors at PWDR as there were at PDDR. I do however think there were some very great racers that ran there. Bnb, 5 Kids, Cash,ZZ, Spacewalker, Murph, Caz......I know, I know, I will get heat for the last 3, but they built some good cars if you really want to be honest and push your feelings aside. I enjoy watching your races, chatting with you guys, and just enjoy the hobby A LOT!!!! LOL
peace

Although an entertaining read, I feel this topic should be moved to the sounding board. It does not represent the atmosphere I have felt at the NPWDRL. Ive had many conversations with John and he has never been degrading to others. He stays above that and that is why this league is growing.

Edit:

Also, this league is growing because of the amazing racers that come here. I feel there is an amazing pinewood derby brotherhood that exists here.

I've been in the league since it started and got to know John a while before he started this League. It seems that in the world of pine wood derby racing there are always those who like to try and stir things up. The foundation the NPWDRL was founded on is made up of racers from the really fast to folks like myself who are learning. We are all racers searching for more speed and making new friends.

John, is an upright guy and always does his very best to make sure we all have the best equipment and place to race. The NPWDRL is strong and will continue to grow which is a reflection on John's vision and leadership. The best way to handle people who like to try and make waves is blow them off. So lets not waste our time on those who would try to undermine the NPWDRL, but instead continue help each other in the search for more speed, have a great time racing and enjoying the NPWDRL.

The OP is actually ahead of schedule. We usually don't get this thread until a month before the Nationals Race. Its actually become comical at this point when one of the "Drama Threads" appear. Here is a little advise on how to survive the next few months while the Drama Squad re-emerges!

Temper your emotional response.

Negative people often gravitate toward others who react strongly–people who easily offer compassion or get outraged or offended. I suspect this gives them a little light in the darkness of their inner world–a sense that they’re not floating alone in their own anger or sadness.

People remember and learn from what you do more than what you say. If you feed into the situation with emotions, you’ll teach them they can depend on you for a reaction. It’s tough not to react because we’re human, but it’s worth practicing.

Once you’ve offered a compassionate ear for as long as you can, respond as calmly as possible with a simple line of fact. If you’re dealing with a rude or angry person, you may want to change the subject to something unrelated.

“Judge nothing, you will be happy. Forgive everything, you will be happier. Love everything, you will be happiest.” ~Sri Chinmoy

PS. ZZ HAS THE QUOTE OF THE THREAD...LOL
