Mashing graphite on wheel bore

Is there a stick or cue tip thing I can buy to help with this. If so where?

Those look like regular cue tips. Is the stick part small enough to. Go in wheel bore with graphite?

I use a drill bit (use the solid part so it won't damage wheel, polish with same process you do on axles) insert bit into wheel, using fingers try and hold bit and wheel so no graphite can escape from inner hub, pour graphite onto wheel bore, using more fingers close the other end, roll on hard surface with slight pressure (I roll on my thigh, hard enough but won't damage wheel) repeat until you beleive you have enough burnished in, you are going to get graphite everywhere this way but it works

Maybe everyone does it this way, but I chuck the Q tip in my drill. Put some graphite on a paper towel. Take the towel and wrap the graphite-d section on the Q tip, squeeze the heck out of it against the Q tip shaft and spin the drill. Kind of burnishes the graphite into the Q tip, then I put it in the bore and spin it slowly.
 
I tried what Kinser suggested using the Q-Tip to burnish the graphite into the bores. I did have better results than a couple of other ways I learned. I used 400 grit sand paper to take the shaft down a bit than hit it with 4000 to smooth it off...

I wish I asked this question 3 years ago saved me so so much time... Side note becareful when you smooth the Q-tip if you go to far it will fold on you ...

I need to burnish some wheels soon, so I appreciate this thread. However, I would be worried that you may have embedded 400 grit particles into the q-tip.
 
I'm curious as to whether running 1.7 gram wheels with graphite would get you below 3 seconds. We have our scout race coming up exactly a week after the March Madness NPWDRL race tomorrow and I have a set of graphite prepped 1.7 gram wheels that are old but were never run.

I also have plenty of stock wheels prepped for oil that I used to practice prep and they are good. I'm wondering which would be faster.
 
I burnished some wheels tonight using a .086 gauge pin, rolling the wheels on a paper towel to mash the graphite in. I only burnished them for 15 to 20 seconds each. I found that when I looked inside the bore under magnification, the graphite was not consistent at all. It was clumped here and there, and not uniform. I use the good stuff (DD4H graphite). I assumed that graphite would be on all surfaces, but there were areas of shiny black between clumps of graphite. Is this normal? Does anyone have a picture of what it should look like?

Wash between rounds with something slightly smaller to help remove/extract these loose particles you may be worried about. Use a dishwash concentrate to help things along.
