A lot of "select pine" at the home improvement stores are sugar pine or yellow pine. You just need to find a straight one.
lol
I would say anything under 20grams will be fine for a scout race.

I looked up the relative densities of common woods and yellow pine and poplar are nearly identical. Has anyone tried using it? Remember, I'm a newbie here if I'm suggesting something heretical be kind.

Poplar and Aspen are good alternatives to pine.

What about the basswood carving blocks that Michael's sells? You should probably be able to find a 40% off coupon if you scout around.

I ask because I've been using poplar for several years and with good drill bits I've had less issues with a lack of precision. I have a decent drill press but it's nothing professional. Just curious. It doesn't warp like pine tends to either.
