Mid America Pinewood Derby 2014

When it comes down to it, just b.c Joe smoe running his rail rider 3 wheel bent axle with derby dust all over them tuned on a treadmill is using mid America wheels, doesn't mean anyone on here can't beat him. Just saying... Not that I know anyone who has tuned on a treadmill before

Instead of telling all the why's you can't or won't run any particular race, just DO IT! And feel good about it that you did. I almost hate to say to use it as a learning experience because here is where all the critics will come out with the unfavorable remarks.

I will race!

I will have fun!

Win or lose, I will have fun!

Greg, For those of us traveling in, is there a time frame for check-in for the open scout and kids? Pro races? I know last year all the Qualified scouts ran first then open. But do I understand there is another track now?

you need to have a class that uses stock wheels ..50.00 for set of wheels is crazy..I wanted to enter car for me and my kids but dont have 150.00 for wheels therefore i will pass this year

I've expressed this same opinion in another forum, and I likewise won't be sending in cars to MA.

I completely understand the inspection/check concern if lightened wheels were disallowed. I simply hope xanthrum reconsiders the rule next year.

Well son of a gun. .. I do indeed have you mixed up with another ickabod... what are the chances. So how does your district tech wheels and how can they determine the difference between a slightly lightened wheel versus a stock wheel. With out trearing apart the car. I just simply want to have fair enforceable rules and the ability to tech in 500 cars in an efficient manner. I am totally open to running a heavier wheel division... Greg

Really glad to read that!

Our council rules are pretty liberal but they forbid lightened wheels. Actually, more specifically, they forbid removing material from inside the wheel. Most other modifications are allowed including coning hubs, sanding/machining for better roundness, etc. The rules also specify a minimum diameter (1.16in) and tread width (7.5mm).

Aftermarket wheels that take full advantage of these council rules cost about $20 and will weight about 2.2 - 2.4 grams.

If someone really wants to cheat and scrape off a few tenths of a gram from inside the wheel then I suppose they could get away with it. But, with any wheel less than 2 grams its pretty easy to tell when that much material has been removed. Even the 2 gram wheels are pretty easy to spot.

At this moment it is hard to say for sure... it is going to greatly depend on the number of entries for each class... and how quickly we go... I hope to be beginning the Open Scout Graphite Division no later than 2pm but right now it is hard to say for sure. I wish I could be more specific

Truly

I dont know who would be more excited it I won that track. Myself or my wife since I wouldnt have to buy one then.

That is the same situation at my house as well.

Greg, I have two more questions. One of the dads showed the boys the MA website and saw the prizes ( I just showed them the rules and video page) . Are Proxy racers going to be eligible for prizes? Should I mail the cars in a bigger box?

Thanks
Tom

Tom - YES - if you can send cars in a bigger box so that we can send back, trophies and prizes that would be awesome - and as a general rule of thumb (I wish there was an exact way to calculate) but please include extra postage $.
